My family's been calling me a "socialist" for so long as a perjorative, and I allowed them to use it as a pejorative, that I shied away from using it to define myself.

Taverner's post in GD about The Internationale woke me up, however. I watched all the YouTube versions he listed and then some, and I studied the original and newer versions of the lyrics, which I'd never known before. They brought tears to my eyes.

For some years now, I've described myself as a "civil libertarian/social democrat," though was shy to fully acknowledge the "social democrat" part. This was because of the Pavlovian reactions many (if not most) Americans have to anything remotely "socialist" without actually knowing what it means. My instinct, bred from childhood, was always to back up and say, "Oh, no, I'm not a 'socialist'!" without forcing them or myself to define our terms.

Well, I'm a socialist and I think I've almost always been one at heart -- and that's no self pejorative. I haven't quite figured out if I'm a social democrat, a democratic socialist, or a marxist, but I'm working on that.

Something tells me that I'll learn a lot from others in this group and I'm glad to be here. :)
