10-year-old's pregnancy fuels Mexican abortion debate By the CNN Wire Staff

April 19, 2010 10:18 p.m. EDT

Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- A pregnant 10-year-old, allegedly raped by her stepfather, has become the latest lightning rod in the country's heated abortion debate.

The girl's stepfather has been arrested. But advocates on both sides of the issue say their battle is just beginning.

"This girl is much more than an isolated case," said Adriana Ortiz-Ortega, a researcher at Mexico's National Autonomous University who has written two books on abortion in Mexico, "and there is much more influence now from conservative groups that are trying to prevent the legalization of abortion."

--------------snip--------------------

Abortion is legal in Mexico's capital city, but prohibited or significantly restricted in most of the country's states. The girl's home state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan peninsula, allows abortion in cases of rape during the first 90 days of the pregnancy. But the 10-year-old girl is at 17½ weeks, nearly a month past that limit.

Advocacy groups are calling for federal officials and the United Nations to investigate Quintana Roo's handling of the matter, claiming officials did not inform her of her abortion rights.

"We don't know what is happening, and the institution that is supposed to provide support and care for these minors hasn't been transparent. We're really asking for accountability," said Maria Luisa Sanchez Fuentes, director of the Information Group on Reproductive Choice.

1. Forgive me...

...for amending the article title in my subject line. But I have a difficult time with the concept of saying a "10 year old's pregnancy"...as if she is somehow responsible for being pregnant. :grr::mad: She is a rape victim. Period.

The situation described in the story breaks my heart, in ways I can't even put into words.

2. God
That this a debate at all. No ten year old can safely deliver. I mean she may, and she may live though it, ripped apart if a vaginal birth and ripped apart in another way if cesarean, and the fetus might, but my God who does that to a traumatized little girl? And then I think, she lives in a country were abortion is something women don't talk much about, or where it's considered more shameful than the rape itself. This is a crazy as it gets.

3. yet. there are threads...
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 06:53 PM by bliss_eternal
...on this board masquerading as "discussion" of abortion, choice and life (as linked in the feminism forum). threads where members piously dictate how women should think/feel about this. bullshit bait disguised as "discussion" enabling some to exercise their need to trash, belittle and bully women....even if only verbally on a message board. :(

i'm sorry, but all that crap seems even more inconsequential when we're talking about a 10 year old female rape victim. :grr::mad: what of this female child's right to life, and healing?

4. If the anti-choice crowd got half as outraged over her rape...
as they get over a woman having the right to choose we'd all be better off.

This poor child has been through enough. She shouldn't be a pawn in a system that's not even sure they let her know her rights.

5. so true.
...but you and i both know, most in the anti-choice crowd tend to see rape as "punishment" for super slutty chicks, "who were asking for it." :eyes:

when it (unfortunately) happens to a child, well...they think that's sad...but if it's a brown child, then it's just a case of "well, you know how those people are." :puke:

(of course, not my thoughts. merely paraphrasing what i've heard some of them say over the years).
