Let's hear it for Ohio......NOT!
Ohio bill: Women need men's permission to have abortions

Oh this is rich. A group of legislators in Ohio are pushing a bill that would give men a say in whether or not a woman can have an abortion.

"This is important because there are always two parents and fathers should have a say in the birth or the destruction of that child," said Adams, a Republican from Sidney. "I didn't bring it up to draw attention to myself or to be controversial. In most cases, when a child is born the father has financial responsibility for that child, so he should have a say."
As written, the bill would ban women from seeking an abortion without written consent from the father of the fetus. In cases where the identity of the father is unknown, women would be required to submit a list of possible fathers. The physician would be forced to conduct a paternity test from the provided list and then seek paternal permission to abort.

Written notes? Submitting a list of potential fathers? Sometimes I think that anti-choice folks forget that women are, you know, adults.

But seriously here's the best part of the bill:

Claiming to not know the father's identity is not a viable excuse, according to the proposed legislation. Simply put: no father means no abortion. <snip>

I was just going to post this;
http://www.msmagazine.com/news/uswirestory.asp?ID=10459

How messed up is it going to get? "Hey Mr Rapist in prison, can I have an abortion, pretty please?"
Makes me sick.

4. Sorry. When I saw this, my first instinct was to scream and throw something, I thought posting it
was a healthier, more productive response.

2. When a man can

...carry a fertilized ovum to term, fine then he can have a say; until then, no fucking way.

Cheers

3. Agree whole-heartedly.

(I love your sig-line by the way. I'm half Swedish, Great-Granddaughter of immigrants. The rest is a bit of Irish and a bit of Norwegian)

5. Thank-you

I read the quote in a book about Carl Larsson. I love his artwork, the quote was a bonus.

Cheers

8. The discussion on this over at digg.com is pretty sickening.
Guys are insisting that carrying to term is insignificant. Their big concern is that some guy might have to pay money to support the child.

Her body, of course, is secondary to his wallet. And her permanently altered life is secondary to his convenience.

6. Thanks for posting
I saw the post about this in the main forum, came to see if anyone had posted about it here. Glad to see it's already here. Though the information is beyond nauseating.

7. I posted this over in GD a bit ago.
We'll see what the general attitude is on this.

Can you imagine if the sperm donor refused to participate in the paternity test? Absolutely no way to get an abortion. The guy has an automatic veto by doing nothing. He doesn't even have to say "no."

9. Someone suggested in another thread in GD that a group of "volunteer dads" be established to
get around this law. My feeling is they will require a paternity test whether or not "permission" has been obtained. I wish more men embraced this issue as stronly as you do, ThomCat!

10. Choice is one of the most important civil rights issues.
If half the population can be designated second class citizens, with lesser legal rights to their own bodies, then we're allowing a precedent that is going to undermine all efforts at civil rights. Anyone who only thinks of their own rights isn't a liberal.

I'm sorry more men aren't all over this issue. :(

14. I'm still here.
I'm trying to build some positive thinking into my mindset though, because there are so many triggers everywhere these days. I am hoping this law will be shot down in due course, it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that will last forever.

I wonder if there's a petition I can sign or something to make myself feel a little better (not that me feeling better fixes the problem of course).

15. Well. That will backfire on them.
Some of those potential fathers are married republicans. They don't value women's privacy, but it will be interesting to see how much they value their own.

I know that the first thing I'd do is provide a list of potential dads who happen to be married republicans in office and religious right clergy. I'd start a campaign to have every woman in that situation list them as potential fathers and get them tested, and keep listing them.

You never know - coulda been a date rape drug and the woman just didn't remember ... best to submit their names and rule them out just in case.
