1. Ugh...!
Thanks for the kind words, smokey nj--and thanks for the link. I'm using my restraint to stay away from that thread. People are entitled to believe whatever the hell they want. Even when I don't like it, and would rather not know about it. But for the life of me, I'll never understand why so-called "progressives" need to believe in principles that take away rights--especially rights for children.

I'm also very suspicious of people that feel the need to "relieve" themselves of such narrow views on this board.
Why? What is the point exactly? Why do you need to tell me that you would take away my daughter's rights (if I had one)? Does it make you feel better to confess? To share with all of us how you subscribe to the same views as those across the political aisle from us?

To me it's the equivalent of being a member of a vegan board, but constantly posting about how you don't think it's so bad to eat meat occasionally, hunt or wear fur.

2. I'm still shocked that there are so many anti-choice DU members.
I include as anti-choice the OP from that thread and other DUers who feel the need to let us know that they're "pro-choice, but..." or "pro-choice, except..." Why do they feel the need to express those sentiments here? I haven't a clue. Maybe they're letting us know that they support our rights only to a certain extent to keep women from getting too uppity (hell, a few seem to feel that we're too uppity already). I don't comment in threads like that because I know I'd get myself banned and it's pointless to debate them because they don't get it and they never will.

That's why I love this forum, everyone here gets it.

about being at DU with other other progressives, it's that, "I"m a liberal, but I'm Pro-Life." stance.

:wtf:

And the horror is they really don't see it as being hateful towards women. They really don't get that limiting our reproductive freedom limits us as human beings. Or maybe they know that it does and it's OK with them. :grr: That's not progressive at all.

4. I think there are definitely a few who downright hate women
and are very comfortable expressing their misogyny - I put those people immediately on ignore. If that's how they feel, then I don't think their opinions on any other topics are valid either.

6. You're smart.
I should have done that ages ago. I only recently started doing that, and it's made my time here much less stressful.

5. They're only fooling themselves...
Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 07:17 PM by bliss_eternal
...as I just don't see someone claiming "pro-life" and "liberal" in the same sentence as being progressive at all. You're right, it's incredibly anti-woman. I'd have more respect for them (as alleged progressives) if they were honest and called it what it really is, "anti-choice/forced birth stance."

I've read too many threads that dissolved into that discussion where people aren't about "the life" at all. It's ok to get the life here, but no consideration at all (even from so called progressives) for raising it or nurturing the "life" beyond that. They could care less if the child sits in foster care indefinitely. :eyes: I've also seen some of the same people that claim they are "pro-life" be incredibly cruel to some DU'ers that have adopted children. As if adoption is an affront to being liberal.

Calling themselves "pro-life" is a bunch of bullshit, as far as I'm concerned.
Somehow telling themselves they are about the "life" involved, makes up for the horror of what they are really saying and doing--clearly denying the person that's already here a choice and blaming that on religion, skewed ideals of morality, sexism, racism, classism and elitism.

When I see people on DU going on ad nauseum about their concern for "life" in regard to abortion, while taking the time to toss off some insults in the pro-choice direction it says the following to me: "....I need to feel better about me and the fact that I have issues with women and sexuality. As such I'll feel SO MUCH better by calling YOU a murder enabler."

Yeah, whatever...I see exactly what you are doing. :eyes:

I had to stop entering threads about it, because I frequently felt compelled to share this view and it is a fruitless, frustrating effort at best.

"concern" trolls.

Thank you for your "concern" about our precious fetuses. :sarcasm:

9. Right, they're pro-choice in certain mythical, idealized
circumstances where only people they find deserving really should get abortions.

It is infuriating that so many people want to put restrictions on people's rights based on idealized reasoning without regard for the real lives that people are living.

11. I realized they were full of shit...
...when I saw them jumping all over someone that adopted her child. Called this member names and other such nonsense. But it was evident to me, they were more concerned with the "politics" of birth and life than they were about the actual child involved after birth.

Hypocrites, plain and simple.

14. I don't get the anti-adoption thing at all and I don't get why these people
feel the need to express their opinions of things that are NONE OF THEIR DAMNED BUSINESS. If you don't want to adopt a kid, then DON'T! It's really that simple.

15. Exactly, those they deem "abortion unworthy" should be forced to face the consequences of their
actions. They're all in favor of "punative motherhood."

16. I have wondered...
...sometimes when reading those comments, where they get such ideas. That women that have sex (that happen to be poor, of color, or other such "unworthiness" in their eyes) are equivalent to sluts?

I've even seen the comments like "they could have used birth control." As if to say, all easily accessible forms of birth control are even reliable. The easiest to get birth control methods (condoms, foam, the sponge, etc.) aren't fail proof. We all know "the pill" isn't equally accessible for everyone that wants or needs it. Especially since this administration opened the flood gates of pharmacists willing to deny women the pill based on their personal desire to do so. :grr::mad:

People that comment on women "not using birth control" show themselves to be ill informed, and obviously have bought into the belief that if a woman gets pregnant it was completely preventable and totally her own fault. It's difficult to have a discussion with anyone that has such biases ingrained in them. Well worth the technology to place them on ignore. ;)

17. Dontcha just love the "she shoulda kept her legs closed" crowd?
The sexual double standard is still alive and well. And after centuries of women and children bearing the societal scorn that came with out-of-wedlock births, they're pissed that men are now sometimes forced to take financial responsibility for their offspring.

Aren't they just the most predictable and tiresome crew? Sadly, quite a few of them are "alleged" female members.

21. I have to be honest...
...initially I was confused by posts like that. It's taken a long time for me to reach the point of mere sadness of seeing women say such things. I had to get past the anger and confusion first.

Oh and I should have said your comment ranked right up there with the one I mentioned. They're all equally disgusting and disturbing to me, particularly on a progressive board--even more so when they come from women. Just wanted to make sure I was clear in that. ;)

13. After seeing so many unsupportive threads
in the Choice forum, particular after the last Scotus decision I sought opinions about creating this place. A group where we didn't have to debate with the forced birthers about our rights.

My desire wasn't entirely altruistic. I was sick of seeing the crap and figured if I was others were too. ;)
