Brownback Introduces Ultrasound Informed Consent Act
Bill to require ultrasound prior to abortion

Thursday, September 20, 2007

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today introduced the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act, legislation which would require that a doctor perform an ultrasound and then share the results with the woman and allow her to view the images before performing an abortion.

"It is necessary and right to provide a woman seeking an abortion with all the available information so that she may make the most informed decision possible," said Brownback. "The Ultrasound Informed Consent Act would ensure that women have access to important information."

The requirements of the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act are placed solely on the doctor, not the patient. A woman seeking an abortion may refuse to view the images of the ultrasound after the results are made available to her. Several states including South Carolina and Texas have recently pursued similar legislation.

Brownback continued, "I am hopeful that this bill will inform women and will cause a deeper reflection on the humanity of unborn children. It is important to promote a culture that values life in all stages."

Brownback is a member of the Senate Judiciary and Appropriations Committees.

2. ITA. I'm sick of these control freaks acting like they should be
"the deciders" of what goes on in my womb, not that anything is going to happen there any more. Shit. I still can't believe we're having to deal with this.

3. I sincerely doubt that Brownback and the rest of the forced-birthers
actually give about abortion either way. It's a political tool to encourage the desperately stupid, and hopelessly insane to vote.

4. It's the history of this country...

...and they refuse to allow any of us to forget it. The fact that men--specifically old, white, heterosexual men created this country and as such, made all the rules. We merely live in their world, we aren't actually considered members of it, entitled to all the rights they created and assume for themselves.

They won't accept or even acknowledge that the world has changed, and is constantly evolving. Laws and rules should change,
taking the diverse needs of individuals into consideration. Not merely dictating to those groups what a select group of people deem appropriate.

These guys want to believe they still live in a society where women know "their place"--as property and bargaining chips for men. "Choice" to me seems so much about advancing their political careers and less about the reality of how it impacts a woman's life.

If they can't have a world where women know "their place" in society, they'll attempt to "reign us in" and show us "who's in charge" by creating prohibitive legislation. Taking us all back to "the glory days" when women didn't even have the right to vote.

5. I don't want to see a goddam ultrasound
I don't want be forced to HAVE an ultrasound to exercise my right to choose. How about I fucking REFUSE to see 1)pictures of any aborted fetus 2)ultrasounds, or have one-- unless medically indicated. 3)any anti-choice forced birth propaganda. What's next? Forced ultrasounds?

At my work there is a very difficult situation, one I can't go into without violating patient's right to privacy, but trust me keeping abortion safe and legal--as a BASIC human right does not require an ultrasound in any circumstance. I'm shaking mad right now.

6. Brownback should be forced to have
extra unnecessary, expensive and preferably invasive medical proceedures forced upon him before he's allowed to get any medical proceedure he wants/needs.

Anyone who proposes these shit anti-choice bills should have medical proceedures forced on them too.

x(
