Planned Parenthood Aint Abortions...
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 10:17 PM by bliss_eternal
During my OB-Gyn rotation, I’ve been working with the great staff of our local Planned Parenthood, and let me just say: Planned Parenthood rocks.

I will admit, fully ignorant of Planned Parenthood beforehand, I thought I’d be doing abortion evaluations. Planned Parenthood equals abortions. That was the extent of my knowledge. I spoke with friends–well-educated, public health-type friends, and that was their same response. “So, did you do any abortions today?”

I was so far, far off base it’s not even funny.* In fact, it may sound ironic, but I’m pretty confident when I say this: No matter what your feelings are about the subject, there would be more abortions performed in this country if Planned Parenthood didn’t exist. Let me explain.

I appreciated this as it's from someone that clearly bought into many of the lies about planned parenthood. It's nice to see that this person was willing to open their minds to this experience (based on their clinical rotation), and learned the truth about the organization and the services they offer.

I've read some truly hateful, bigoted and disturbing lies about planned parenthood on-line(mostly by conservatives, religious organizations, etc.). One used racial slurs to describe M. Sanger while seeming to simultaneously bash and praise her efforts to "wipe out poor and minorities." :eyes: Sadly far too many just buy into perpetuated lies about pp and never take the time to "see" what they are really about. They hear Planned Parenthood and immediately think "abortion." :eyes:

Anyway, very interesting read considering this comes from a future male physician. The comments that follow are also worthy of a read (if you have time). :hi:

1. It is a very interesting read.
I hope he continues to support Planned Parenthood as he moves on in his career.

2. I find it incredible that someone studying medicine had that atitude, am glad it was changed.
It shows how persuasive "PP is abortions" meme is. I hope he continues thinking this way.

3. He's not the only one...
...in medicine with that attitude, sadly. :( Through seeking content for this group, I encountered a board for medical professionals. Far more than I expected embraced the "pp=abotions" idea. What saddened me even more, was reading the responses of medical pros that insisted on working in women's reproductive health as a specialty, but refused to participate in abortions or serve/assist abortion patients in any way.

They know the science, they learn it in their studies (fetal development, etc.). Despite that it seems their religious beliefs reign supreme and they allow that to color their choices in patient care.
