Unmasking McCain
Edited on Tue May-27-08 11:42 PM by ismnotwasm
First of, I hope the low activity on this group will spare us some of the acrimony as far as the primaries, even though it's mentioned in the article. I'm not trying to tell anyone to vote, how to vote or even my opinion of either Democratic contender.

But I did want to post this, mostly because McCain is a forced birth asshole.

Unmasking McCain: His Reactionary Record on Reproductive Rights

=================
For anyone -- male or female -- who cares about reproductive rights, family planning, and women's health issues, the choice this fall is not even close.

And yet many voters have no idea how extreme McCain's position on these issues is.

I was in Seattle last week giving a speech at a fundrasing lunch for Votes! Washington, the political arm of Planned Parenthood in Washington State. At the event, the group's CEO Elaine Rose told me about a poll that Planned Parenthood had commissioned of women in 16 battleground states . The results are startling:

Over half of all women in these states have no idea what McCain's positions are on reproductive health. Forty-nine percent of women in battleground states who currently favor McCain are pro-choice. Twenty-three percent of them believe McCain agrees with them on choice.

1. This scares me. I understand being disappointed because your chosen candidate didn't
win, but I don't get cutting your nose to spite your face. I really hope that much of the "I'm voting for McCain" talk is just that - talk and cooler heads will prevail.

2. Are there any on the right that support choice...?
It seems that every one that makes it to a prominent party position is a forced birth, anti-choice, fundie friendly, woman hater. At least most of the one's in my lifetime. :(

3. Guiliani did when he was mayor, but abandoned his position when
he entered the Mr. Thorazine pageant that was the race for the Republican nomination.

4. It's a shame...
...that misogyny is the value of choice for the right. Disturbing when I allow myself to really think about it. But consistent. Most of the conservatives I've encountered haven't seen women as worthy of rights (sadly that includes women in the party). :(

5. As far as they're concerned, women have the right to sit down and shut up.
Unfortunately, there are many on our side who seem to feel the same way. I can't begin to tell you how disillusioned I am about where things are going.

6. Oh, WTF.....?

Just saw a f****g John McCain for President ad on Lifetime tv. Excuse me, but what universe am I living on when McCain ads are running on an (alleged) women's network?

If I wasn't so sure I'd get some canned speech (or form letter) about "advertising dollars, blah, blah" I would lodge some sort of complaint. Guess I'm picking and choosing my battles these days, somehow the tv network featuring thinly veiled sexism in it's programming doesn't seem worthy of my energy. :eyes:
