Obama May Reverse Abortion Policy through Executive Order:CNN

President-elect Barack Obama is considering issuing an executive order to reverse a controversial Bush administration abortion policy in his first week in office, three Democratic sources said Monday.

Obama's second full day as president falls on the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the United States.

Source said Obama may use the occasion to reverse the "Mexico City policy" reinstated in 2001 by Bush that prohibits U.S. money from funding international family planning groups that promote abortion or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion services. It bans any organization receiving family planning funds from the U.S. Agency for International Development from offering abortions or abortion counseling.

The "Mexico City policy," commonly referred to by critics as "the global gag rule," was devised by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 at a population conference in Mexico City.

President Bill Clinton lifted the ban in January 1993 as one of his first acts as president, but President George W. bush reinstated it in his first executive order on January 22, 2001, the 28th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

At the time, critics — including Planned Parenthood — called the move a "legislative ambush."

1. Excellent, though I'd call is reversing a contraception policy.

If a place mentions abortion as a choice, they can't have money. If they refer someone somewhere that does abortions, they can't be funded. It is incredible and I would be very happy to have him get rid of this.

I know I'll never agree with every single thing President Obama will do, probably will strongly disagree on some things, but I'm loving him so far.

3. Between this, and now putting US money back into UN efforts

internationally, I'm pleasantly surprised. He's doing things right out of the gate that I thought would only happen down the road with prodding.

But these are all things he can do with an executive order. We'll see how well he fights when it's a battle over legislation and funding. That's where we'll really see what he believes and how strongly.

I liked Pres. Clinton, but I didn't agree with everything he did, and some of what he did, pissed me off.
But for the most part, I liked and appreciated the human being I saw beneath the man. Unfortunately, I didn't care for some of the other stuff "the man" (within the human) did--but that's another thread altogether. ;)

All of this is just to say, I don't think any of us could possibly be expected to like or agree with every single thing ANY candidate for any office is going to do, particular when it's the President. The power and scope of the office is so great, they can do so much--and I just don't think it's realistic to believe anyone is going to agree with everything any one in that position does.

I'll be honest, I'm suspect of the posters that have seemed to LOVE everything about Obama, all along. They were beyond "enthusiastic" about his campaign, his election, and today they are over the moon. There's something that makes me uncomfortable about that level of support. It seems inevitable to be met with a serious crash and fall, at some point.
