In an ancient Inca cemetery just outside Lima, Peru, archeologists made a disturbing discovery: a
cluster of skeletons dumped in shallow, hasty graves, victims of brutal injuries. Among the
crushed cheekbones and snapped limbs, the scientists find a skull bearing two round puncture holes.
Could this be New World's first gunshot victim?
Using a mix of crime-lab science, archeology, and history, NOVA, in collaboration with National
Geographic Television, reports on how this discovery is changing what we know about the final days
of the once-mighty Inca Empire. Challenging the once-accepted picture of a swift Spanish conquest
of the Inca, the findings paint a portrait of a complex civil war in which local Andean Indians
fought side-by-side with the Spanish in secret alliances to bring down an empire on the verge of
collapse.
