Mummy identified as Hatshepsut
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 10:21 AM by malta blue
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Egyptian authorities using DNA analysis and a tooth identified Wednesday a mummy found a century ago as the remains of pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut.

The mummy was discovered in Egypt's Valley of the Kings burial ground in 1903, but had not been identified as that of the queen and was left on site until two months ago when it was brought to the Cairo Museum for testing, said Egypt's antiquities chief Zahi Hawass.

"We are one hundred percent certain" the mummy belongs to Hatshepsut, Hawass told The Associated Press....

This is a fascinating story - but the question I have for this group is: What do you think of this Zahi Hawass guy? He really bothers me as an archaeologist and being the antiquities chief in Egypt he kills me by "opening" tombs with Maury hanging out next to him. His career is quite illustrious but he just bothers me....

Anyone have thoughts on him?

2. He has such an amazing background, but why does he
come off as such a quack?

3. I thought it was me
But when I see him on the tv I've been a little bit turned off. I guess it's just personal chemistry. He has a lot to be proud of.

I'm more impressed by people like Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium. He oozes sincerity and makes me want to know more about a topic that intimidates me. http://haydenplanetarium.org/about/message/

4. Not you...he comes off as a quack to me too.
I have found in my experience, that most of us archaeologists are a little strange, I mean, there has to be something that drives us to spend endless hours in hostile climates (most of the time) doing manual labor....

5. Hawass should spend less time intimidating adversaries and more time in the field
Hawass is a profoundly well-educated, knowledgeable guy with the soul of Don Corleone.

6. Zahi Hawass is a "golden ape"
He's an arsehole who hasn't done anything (except get in the way of projects)
since about 1996 (or possibly earlier) but who has managed to attain the
ultimate power of access to all Egyptian sites.

One of his "rules of access" is that he is always credited with his fawning
(self-appointed) title on any report of interest.

Don't (whatever you do) look into his funding or draw any inference thereof ...
