Has anyone gone on a dig in the U.S.?

My partner and I am interested in helping on a dig. Anyone go to any on the mound digs along the Mississippi? We're mostly interested in Native American digs.

What ever you do, make sure you volunteer on a dig with professional archaeologists - watch out for digs on private land that are just people "collecting" (aka looting). Going through one of the above organizations is probably your best bet. If you need to be more local, find the nearest university with an anthropology department and contact them - they usually will know about volunteer opportunities in the state. You can also contact your state's historical society for information.
