Circular Aztec temple found in Mexico

Mexico City

- A temple built on a circular base, possibly consecrated to the Aztec wind god, has been found in the historical centre of Mexico City.

Archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma told the German Press Agency dpa Monday that the finding was made about two months earlier.

Matos Moctezuma, Mexico's most respected archaeologist and coordinator since 1978 of excavations on the remnants of the former Aztec capital, said the building was found behind Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral.

Experts believe it was consecrated to the Aztec wind god, Ehecatl- Quetzalcoatl, because 'such temples had as their characteristic the presence of a circular base and of a square base.'

2. So glad you're interested, as well. Absolutely wonderful information.
I'll post anything I find here, as I'm constantly looking through news articles on Latin America. There's so much we NEED to know.

Hope they make a lot more progress during our lifetimes.

3. Ancient Aztec temple found in colonial building
Ancient Aztec temple found in colonial building

The remains of an ancient Aztec temple have been found inside a normal building in Mexico.

Archaeologists believe it dated from 1486 to 1502AC, when Emperor Ahuizotl ruled during what is called the Auge era of the Aztec empire.

Archaeologist Raul Barrera said the temple was clearly one of the most important buildings of the ancient Aztec capital, because it was dedicated to the wind god Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl.

He said: "This god's function was to create wind. He had the power to produce wind and, at the same time, open paths so that the gods, in his case Tlaloc and his helpers the Tlaloques, would produce rain. And the building we've been able to identify is the posterior part of the temple Ehecatl."

The temple is located inside a colonial-era building in the heart of the Mexican capital and was discovered when the owner applied to remodel it. In Mexico, archaeologists inspect the construction of all buildings in the historic districts before issuing remodeling permits.

Historians believe that much of Mexico City is built on the remains of the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan which was destroyed by the Spanish when they colonized the country during the sixteenth century.
