UNITED KINGDOM - Northern airports should abandon hopes of winning flights to Heathrow and accept highspeed rail as a better option, a report headed by a Liverpool MP says today.
The study backs the controversial expansion of Britain''s biggest airport, but concludes it is needed to meet growing demand for international - rather than domestic - flights.
More than 80% of passengers will choose rail if, as promised, the journey time from Liverpool to London is slashed to just one hour 40 minutes by a high-speed line, the transport committee concluded.
It was therefore essential that the 225mph link - which is now backed by all three political parties - goes directly to Heathrow, as well as central London.
The conclusions are a blow to John Lennon Airport''s hopes of reviving flights to London, which ended when VLM quit flying from JLA to London City Airport, in 2007. ..........(more)
