Because the list owner has asked for increased readership, I'm copying here the latest missive from the antiques and collecting newsletter. It's free, of course, and leads to entertaining exploring of web sites. Here it is: Antiques & Collecting Newsletter Volume 12, Number 10 April 1, 2008 Ron McCoy, editor http://collectingbuzz.com
Ah, it's April Fools' Day, one of the most light hearted days of the year. Have fun today because in just fourteen days your income taxes are due. No foolin’! It's no wonder that The Health Resource Network has designated April as Stress Awareness Month. :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOTTLES, JARS AND BOXES http://www.packagemuseum.com/index.htm
Can you imagine taking on the task of listing and photographing the hundreds and hundreds of commercial product packages from the past? The owner of the American Package Museum site has undertaken that very thing, and now it's possible to take a trip down memory lane just by looking at an old box of Jolly Time Popcorn or a jar of Noxzema Skin Cream. Oh, how packaging has changed! But oh, what memories those containers dredge up! The photos of the packages are large and very clear, and some can even be seen in 3-D. Click the 3-D icon on certain packages, then run your mouse over the product and watch it twirl to show off every angle. I assume the impressive collection is that of just one person, Ian House. Mr. House hopes to use the site to develop a community of others who are interested in collecting examples of obsolete packaging.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UP, UP AND AWAY http://www.fantastic-plastic.com
The sticky stuff that holds this site together is model glue, a substance used in the creation of the flying machines chronicled within. Fly into this scaled-down world and learn about the sleek concept aircraft of the '80s or reminisce at the pop-culture rockets of the '50s. Broken down by decade and type of aircraft, browsing around this virtual hangar is a true flight of fancy. Click under "Let's Explore".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A COLLECTIBLE STAPLE http://www.westgroton.com/staplers
Since the days of King Louis XV of France -- 1866 to be exact -- people have been fastening their papers together with pieces of metal of one kind or another. This site discusses the evolution of the stapler and shows the various makes and models that have graced offices for decades. Old Staplers Website is generously illustrated and holds a wealth of obscure facts about staples and staplers. From Hotchkiss to Swingline to Bostich, they're all here. It is an interesting fact that the stapler was, in its infancy, considered an office frivolity and extravagance. One stapler for every 500 employees was thought to be sufficient.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A COLLECTIBLE THAT SHOULD NEVER GO FLAT http://antiqueshoppefl.com/archives/rnuhn/ashtray.htm
Most should remember the obscure collectible known as the rubber tire ashtray. Ashtrays themselves are becoming an endangered species, yet most tire companies used the clever promotional items throughout the early history of the auto, and they came in many interesting forms. This article discusses the history of the tire ashtray and provides information for the small yet dedicated group of collectors.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NATIONAL POSTCARD WEEK http://www.postcardcollector.com http://www.barrspcn.com
Members of the postcard collecting community will celebrate National Postcard Week, during the first full week in May. Each year postcard collectors, called deltiologists, commemorate the occasion by creating home-made postcards and sending them to their postcard-collecting friends. This tradition has been followed nationwide since 1984, when National Postcard Week began. The variety of cards produced by collectors is never-ending, from professionally printed photographs to hand-drawn or rubber-stamped individualized cards. If you're a collector, you may be hard at work creating a personal postcard to send to your friends in commemoration of the occasion. If you're not a postcard collector, you might well receive one of these personal creations from a friend who is. It's how postcard collectors "get the word out" about their beloved and popular hobby.
If you'd like to discuss this hobby and correspond with other postcard collectors, or if you'd like to learn more about postcards, visit our Message Board and click on "Postcards". It's free to browse and read the messages but if you'd like to join in the discussions, you must register:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TANKS AND MORE http://www.ohiobarns.com/othersites/arttanks/artistictanks.html
Ohio Barns offers us a really great collection of painted tanks. Some are downright clever, such as Blaine County, Oklahoma's Cow tanks and the Watermelon tank. Many are appealing in a kitschy way, like the Smile tank and the goofy Face tank. And some are unintentionally disturbing -- witness the eerie Clown tank of Clark County, Ohio. But most will elicit a smile or two.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EBAY'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE http://pages.ebay.com/ebaylive
Early registration is open for the eighth annual eBay Live to be held June 19-21 at Chicago's McCormick Place West. New President and CEO, John Donahoe, will give the keynote address.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ USPS POSTAGE INCREASE http://www.usps.com/prices
On May 12 the United States Postal Service will increase rates for Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, Parcel Return Service and International Mail. Highlights of all price changes can be found at the above website.
