I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. B-)
I've been very fortunate to have fellow DUers help with a variety of things in these sub-group forums. Now, due to the death of a family member, I am in need of someone to perhaps shed some light on the serious hobby of stamp collecting, and selling.
My husband and I have been down the path of reviewing Scott's catalog and comparing it to the stamps we inherited, had it evaluated at a local reputable dealer, and have reviewed quite a few online dealers catalogs.
Long story short, the prices vary so much we're finding it nearly impossible to wrap our heads around what is a good price to be offered. We understand perforations, gutters, and the myriad other elements that come into play (and greatly respect those of you who are experts in this field). But, often it appears that the exact same stamp, of the same quality, is offered by one dealer for $50 and another for $1200. Sometimes a dealer offers a stamp at his "professional" website for $1000 and on his ebay store for $50 (buy it now price).
Is there any reliable method of selling classic collectible postage stamps, either directly through the consumer or through a dealer? We also understand that, like anything, it's a matter of the market - perhaps someone is willing to pay way over market value to simply complete his/her collection. But the list prices just confuse the heck out of us.
Any insights or suggestions you can share?
Many, many thanks in advance. :hi:
