Let's talk about Pedro Friedeberg
Someone whose name I never knew until yesterday. Also, someone who's name is often misspelled.

He's the guy responsible for this:

or

Now, the reason this came to my attention was because there is this ebay item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280227092645&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018

and Friedeberg's name is invoked, although misspelled. And clearly the chairs are not the same, but there are some details that are similar.

I know this chair inspired alot of copy-cats.

So, what do you think? Could this be an early Friedeberg creation, or an inspired copy?

As a tangent, while researching Friedeberg, I noticed this one print of his:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PEDRO-FRIEDEBERG-JEWISH-ART-MEXICAN_W0QQitemZ190216768071QQihZ009QQcategoryZ360QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

and then later while thriftstoring, with Friedeberg and rabbits still on my mind, found this interesting primative metal rabbit candle stand, that looked maybe Mexican-influenced, and since it was 50%-off day and it was only a couple bucks, I took it home:

I was thinking the rabbit might be like the one in the print, but clearly it's not. So now I have this odd rabbit candle stand to research.

1. Hmmmm...
Most of the repos of this chair I have seen have been done in plastic/polymer type of material. I would hazard to say that the wood one could be an early example or and extremely fine homage piece by an unknown artist. The difference in the prices leads one to doubt that it is the real deal but, it just may be.

Love the candle holder!

2. There seems to be a signature in one of the pics
but I cannot make it out.

What strikes me is the similarity of the nail design. There are so many other features that are obviously different (knuckle detail, wrist detail) that it's clear that the artist was not *trying* to duplicate the work. And yet, the nails are virtually the same. Hmmmmmm... indeed.

Also, wrt the price issue: sometimes people just do not know what they have. Even when they cite Friedeberg, they misspelled his name, which tells me something.

I actually had considered making the 3 hour drive to go look at it...

3. I personally think it may be a genuine Friedeberg.
You cannot make out the sig in the pics but, it looks like the correct number of letters. It would be worth the drive IMO to see if it is worth it....if it is real...to get it at that price would be a genuine steal. Good luck and let us know!
