ebay identity hijacked for 2nd time in a year....

I have just spent the entire evening tonight trying to undo what someone did to my ebay account for the 2nd time in a year. It was hijacked yet again, and my e-mail address changed, as was the name on the account and address. After speaking with LIVE CHAT and making the necessary changes, I updated PayPal too. Ebay tried to assure me that the information on Ebay was on a different server than the information at PayPal. I just didn't want to take any chances.

I went through the list of things that may have occurred with the LIVE CHAT person, and neither of us could figure out what caused this breach for the 2nd time. The first time, someone was actually able to list pages worth of stuff using my identity, before Ebay saw that this wasn't my usual behaviour and yanked all the auctions.

I don't use my ebay account very often any more so this was a surprise to me. I don't want to lose my feedback score so that's why I don't just close the account and start over.

Has anyone else had a problem with hijacking? Is there anyway to protect against this? I have a high-speed firewall, and don't respond to any suspicious 'pfishing' e-mails purportedly from ebay.

I did screen capture the guy's info, including his home address (if accurate) and phone number, and IP address. Ebay suggested my taking them to the police, but I'm not sure if they would actually do anything about it.

1. Did ebay know how it happened?

I'm technically-challenged and didn't think anyone could mess with the account unless they had the password.

2. Watch for the phishing emails

The most important rule is to NEVER reply to any emails purporting to be from eBay or paypal that come thru your outlook or other personal email account. The phishers are getting so good that I sometimes get spoof emails that list my own items and ask plausible questions, etc.

I only reply thru the My Ebay area. Otherwise, if you reply to one of those fake ones, they can grab your identity in a heartbeat.

3. they went through this list of things with me, but none of them rang true

for me. They said a family member must know my username and password (Nope), then it must be that I don't have a high-speed internet firewall (nope, Mr. ld is a computer consultant, and you can be sure that we have every protection that one could possibly imagine), then they said that I must have responded to a pfishing e-mail and someone got my info that way (nope, in fact I was VERY leery to respond to the e-mail alerting me to the fact that someone had changed my password, until I could see that the return e-mail was a genuine ebay e-mail address). Finally, the LIVE CHAT gal said she didn't understand how someone could have gotten all that info. All she could say was that it was serious, and that I should report it to the police. :shrug:

4. I had mine hijacked once.

I had listed a boat for sale. A 'potential buyer' asked a
question through ebay, "is this boat like this one listed here"...
when I clicked on 'read', it took me to what appeared to be the
ebay login page, it wasn't. I only signed in because I was already
on 'my ebay' and figured it was all kosher. That is how they got my
password. I had it back under control in less than 24 hours thanks
to live support.
