Old tube radios

I can't believe how much time each new diversion takes. Most of these should be very easy and quick, and most are, but I keep hitting difficult ones.

I found a GE clock radio a few days ago that I'm just now researching. I have looked at every single one on ebay, and on every site I can find, and cannot identify this one (the label has been removed). I can get very close, like just one model away, but still cannot find this exact model.

The problem with when this happens is that the more time I spend on an item, the more invested I become in it and then not only will not relinquish it, but then start thinking (or worse) about actually acquiring *more* since now I know about them and what they're worth, and can recognize bargains ::sigh::

And what continually fascinates me is (and I know I keep saying this) how so many of these things, while in the thrift store, look so ordinary or even unnoticable, and yet when I bring them home, they spring to life and take on a whole new character. I don't quite yet understand this, but it's becoming a problem, lol. So many times I buy things with the sole intent of reselling it immediately but more often than not (let's say 99:1) it doesn't happen.

But enough complaining, let me get to the item. Well, I don't have a photo of it yet, but have other data.

It's very closely related to the C-426A (and c-491B and C-446A) in that they all use the same case and layout (except mine is an awesome aqua color and has the buttons above the clock instead of below it, and has the snooze button below the clock face) and so it dates somewhere between 1957-1959.

I have looked at all of the "gallery" and "museum" and "collector" sites and have yet to see this exact model.

If there are any tube radio buffs out there who might know of a helpful link that's hidden away... maybe some place that talks about the specific timeline for GE radios? Surely there must be such a site, I just haven't found it yet.

3. Awesome old radio!!!

Love the aqua!! I have an old Crosley that I listen to every day (in my kitchen). Also have a huge floor model with the big long perpendicular internal antenna...it works but, we seldom play it - it is for display mostly in our dining room (it matches my 1920s dining suite).

I do the same thing you talk about, get something home...find out about it..and become enamored with grabbing up similar bargains.

4. what you describe might be called hoarding...

...or it might just be the thrill of the research and a natural affinity for old and interesting things. I guess it's only a problem if it becomes a health hazard or interferes with family relationships.

My mentor was on the cusp of being a hoarder. He was a dealer -- an expert really -- in old images and coins. He branched out to other kinds of paper. But he had a general knowledge of just about everything, it seemed. And so he bought, bought, bought. He had to take a separate apartment with a basement, and it was stuffed to the gills, too. He sold some things, but never in proportion to what he bought. In other areas of his life, he was a frugal Scotsman. With a treasure in his basement.

I have that problem to some degree. Tubs and tubs and tubs of stuff in the basement and in closets.

5. LOL, yes, that's an apt term

I've seen shows about people who hoard, some were really scary. I know I'm not that bad yet, because I can still walk through the house and open all the doors, lol. But then again, if I had to live in a very small place, things might be different. But I HATE clutter! So I'm motivated to either get rid of stuff or move it to where I can't see it. Although, this past several weeks it's been like I've been on a binge because of my exposure to a new genre of stuff to collect (mid-century), and I keep finding things faster than I can dispose of them.

I don't even want to tell you what I found today. There was a swap meet in town... omg...

8. you are correct about looking at an object in the "thrift shop"

it's the hardest thing to do-seeing something special amongst all the rubbish. You have to train yourself to have a "good eye" and see things in another setting.
