Hallmark on a platter
It's very heavy so likely silver plate, but wouldn't it be nice if it were all silver?

Have looked at lots of hallmarks and so far cannot id this one. Does the bird (peacock?) head mean anything to anyone - Scandinavian, Swedish perhaps?

2. I would sorta think it's a lion
but I'm not sure it's facing the correct way. A leopard is also British.

I've looked through some books and websites and haven't yet seen even the first one anywhere, let alone the third, whatever kind of bird that is.

I'm thinking someone just made it up, lol

3. Now I"m thinking it's some contemporary piece
with this made up mark to make it look like it's important.

The joining of the 3 boxes, the unidentifiable animals.

Also, the tarnish has some rainbow colors, from green to purple, which only happens with plate, so best case this is plated, so eh, a dime a dozen, especially if not able to ID, right?

5. Congrats! (I think - teach what?)
Hopefully you'll not be teaching middle school, that would be tough. Or high school.

I just signed up for a silver forum, I may post there - I think it's going to turn out to be either fake or obscure - by fake, I don't mean actual fake, just something trying to pretend to be important. You know, like if Walmart produced a silver plate item, they'd put a mark like this :D

Scroll down to Crescent Silverware mfg. Co.

right column, third from the bottom

And more:
CRESCENT SILVERWARE MFG CO INC - Port Jervis, NY
Founded in 1922. Moved to Port Jervis in 1939. Sold to Samuel Kirk & Son Inc. in 1977

Also, you can get an instant appraisal here:
http://www.instappraisal.com/searchinstappraisal.php?query=%20&page=580&limit=10

There's a more recent Crescent Silverware appraised there for $50 on down the page from above link :hi:

Crescent Silverware Company Serving Bowl -
Item Description: Double clam shell centered with scroll motif, raised on snake head design legs.

Market Value: $50.00

Condition: New

Market History: Crescent Silverware Manufacturing Company was founded in 1922 in New York and is still in operation today offering about 450 different items. Your example was probably made after 1960 when the company focused on only silverplate. The market is soft at the moment for silverplate as the supply has overcome the demand.

8. O. M. G. !!! You're magical!!!
I looked all over that website (or thought I did)! I had a nagging feeling that I should have paid more attention to that "C" - oh boy, thanks so much now I can go see if that "C" is for a year (if so, then what, probably 1924) or if it's for the Crescent.

WOW I am, once again, so damned impressed! Thanks so much for taking the time to look - I swear I was ready to just give up, thinking it was some Chinese import fakery.
