Today's flea market finds
I was so looking forward to this month's flea market!! Remember last month I got there late when people were packing up, so while I still found some great stuff, I was looking forward to having another shot at it.

So look what I brought home!

That blue bird certainly has a fun attitude.

2. Dotscom, do those cats have any markings on them?
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 05:02 PM by sufrommich
Like "Lisa L.?Is the owl dish marked? If the bird is from Italy ,it's a Bitossi.

Edit for bad english

3. Yes, and I owe both you and Eleny my gratitude
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 05:31 PM by dotcosm
That orange lamp started it all. The only reason I recognized the Bitossi is because I spent hours yesterday and last night learning about Londi and Bitossi, thanks to your post in the Italian lamp thread. Otherwise, I would have walked on by like everyone else was doing!

The bird is marked "Italy" and a number. Do you suppose it's ok to assume it's Londi, or?

The cats are unquestionably Lisa Larson - one has part of the Gustavsberg sticker still on.

The other pieces are interesting and marked as well, but I haven't done research yet. The pair of pitchers might be by someone else that I stumbled upon yesterday while researching something else - but I haven't confirmed yet.

The wooden thing is a Dansk Quistgaard cheese board and knife.

I had to really scour the place for mid century stuff!

edit to add: the owl dish is only marked with "Priolo" - I have no idea who that is (yet)

The other owl is a Tonala.

And the thing in the back on the left is an unmarked (but very cool!) butter bell

4. Good for you!!
Great finds! The bird is definitely Bitossi, google "rimini bird" and I'll bet you'll find it. I am green with envy with those Larsen cats(but happy for you).

5. Well fortunately, I had been googling "rimini" plenty last night
I guess there was a good reason, lol. I'm not even sure how I got on that tangent, but I know it started when I was trying to identify the orange lamp.

And the cats, not sure when or how those came into my awareness, but I know it was very recently, probably even just yesterday. You'd die to know how I found them -- just laying haphazardly on tables piled with "stuff" - the same vendor that I found the Stocksdale pepper mill at last month. I'm detecting a trend here. The Quistgaard also came from there, and the owl dish. Again, just had my arms full of stuff (more wooden things I didn't photo yet) and he said "Six dollars" - :wow:

9. I was just getting ready to post the new pic you found
It's definitely Aldo! Sometimes if I have a pretty good idea who the makers is,I switch to "images" on google and hope I see what I'm looking for.

12. Me too - do most of my searching via "Images"
It's so much faster.

I've got such a headache now, this is just too much excitement, lol. Or, it was getting up so early to be there at 8am (although they opened at 7, yikes). The place was jammed packed, too, at 8am, I was shocked.

I was practically positive it was Londi/Bitossi, which was why I was willing to pay waaaaaaay more than I ever do - even so, it was a steal ($20). Hey, I don't set the prices, I just pay them :D

8. I was too shy to wonder out loud about the bird being Bitossi....
But I came across much blue pottery of that company in recent web searches that it came to mind today. I'm so glad sufrommich said something. It's an ongoing education and I'm grateful for your mid century jag and sufrommich's and your collective knowledge on it. Some things are starting to stick.

I'm going to look much more carefully at items that say to me - "just another 70s thing" and had me walk away in the past. Seems like I have to shake off that blase attitude towards things that seemed to be all over the place way back then. I was always and still am a '30s and 40s person. I have to get it through my head that certain 70s art has come into its own and is disappearing - but was always special even if I didn't recognize it back then. Hope that makes sense! I find it very cheerful now.

Btw, I think the kitty that's sitting all in a little bundle is darned cute. I love it when cats tuck themselves all in like that.

Congrats again and thanks for posting about all your finds!

P.S. The lamp doesn't work with a new bulb. Since the metal lighting parts look crummy & grungy I'll go ahead and rewire. Also, there is a crack in the orange enamel at the top. But it's a hairline and the entire bottom is in relatively good shape. I saw one lamp of the period with orange on the base that has an orange shade. So I might go a little wild once I find a suitable old shade in the right size & shape. We'll see.

:hi:

10. Eleny, you could always buy and sell the 60's and 70's
stuff to fund your 30's and 40's stuff! Every house I've ever lived in has been an eclectic mix of styles, but I always go for the 40's look kitchen
It really was hard for me to think of 60's and 70's stuff as "antiques",too. I grew up in that era, what does that make me?(don't answer)

13. Shy? Really? I never would have thought that of you!
So orange is growing on you now, eh?

And I know exactly what you mean about adjusting your vision - I had to do the same thing. It took some effort to finally *see* so many things that I had been bypassing for years because they were so common when I was growing up.

I've also been spending a lot of time browsing the modern auction sites (ragoarts.com is great, and treadway) - that's really the best way to get saturated with the "important" designs.

I have looked high and low for your lamp, still no luck so far. But the learning process has already paid dividends for me :D :hi:

I think I should send sufrommich that cat :D

18. You know, it wasn't the style - it was the name
I was researching another piece yesterday that was signed with what appears to be Vega (still a mystery though) and ran across this Eduardo Vega in the process, so I had just seen his signature style yesterday.

25. I only remembered because it was just yesterday
Typically when I'm in a store, looking at things, seeing names, trying to commit them to memory, reciting the name over and over and over and over in my head while wandering through the store, sure that I'll remember it at least until I get home. Nope. I've found that I have to write it down the second I get into my car, and even then it's only about 50% chance that I remember. Frustrating!

You know what I saw a guy doing today? At the swap meet, he was flipping through a stack of CDs and scanning them (the bar code I guess) with his cell phone (or something). The vendor asked him about it, and he said he was checking the prices because he sells them online. DAMN!! Talk about high-tech approach! I don't even use a camera phone, or have a laptop in the car, or call anybody to look things up for me! Can you imagine going around to thrift stores and having your cell phone tapping into some database at home???

It's a wonder we ludites manage to find anything at all! (not that we're really ludites, but compared to that guy...!)

28. I've seen people at sales talking on cel phones to...
...someone at home on the computer. It makes sense if you have the capability. I often take down the names of books in used bookstores and go home and look them up, and then go back to buy if I can make $$ on them.

29. And yet, we *do* find really nice things
I think it's also a matter of timing. Like when I went back for the lamp and passed the two vintage tablecloths. I'm sure I checked that rack when I was at the store earlier. It may be that the floor person put them out when I was gone.

And then there was the time when I found the tablecloth with the all the sought after colors and met a dealer who commented on it. She came down all the way from one of the mountain towns. In the end they can only be in one place at a time.

One last thing - I'd like to see that data base, though!

16. uh.........owls
The owls still make me shudder. I'm going to have to re-train my sensibilities. Lord almighty, what's next? Mushrooms??!! :sarcasm:

My walking-distance neighborhood garage sales turned up the following:

three very nice old wooden mixing bowls
a 1964 Parties for Children Betty Crocker book (clean duplicate for me)

A cedar chest for two bucks. It needs to be refinished because it's painted over in shabby white -- really shabby. I haven't looked at the bottom to see if there are any markings yet. Solid cedar.

17. A two buck cedar chest?? Betcha it's a Lane
Seems like every cedar chest I ever see is a Lane. No matter what it looks like, they are great for storage of fabrics/bedding, good score. But walking distance - did it have wheels on it? Actually that reminds me of what I did to my cedar chest - of course, this was before I understood the mid century craze - but I replaced the legs with those sturdy metal roller ball coaster things, so it could roll on the carpet easily. Doubt I'd take it for a walk outside though  (ok, I know, you must've gotten the car to go back and pick it up).

And I know what you mean about the owls. Twin peaks anyone?

And mushrooms! Owls and mushrooms, definitely. I'm still learning to see them, forcing myself to pick them up and examine them (and often lately, bring them home)

24. actually, I got my Radio Flyer and brought it home.
One time on an evening walk I found a jelly cupboard with fabulous paint and a free sign, and sent the teenager home for the skateboard; we rolled the jelly cupboard home.

27. I have my mother's old hope chest, a Lane cedar chest.
It even has the tags on the inside of the lid, with the year (IIRC, 1938 or thereabouts). I'll probably sell it eventually; right now I'm still too busy going through all of her things.

I gave myself an earworm too, btw, if it's any consolation.

About the owls and macrame, I shouldn't poke fun. I have a macrame owl. At least it's out in one of the sheds hanging in a corner. It was definitely bought in the '70s.
