Thrifting today

Stopped at the thrift today. I passed up a funky aluminum canister set. It was 4 pieces and would have looked nice in our second kitchen. When I added each piece together it came out to over $20. Meh.

But there were three consolation prizes. A cute purple and white gingham apron with white cross stitching. I don't think it was ever used.

And a piece of metal, 2 ft tall, painted with bright florals and cutout along the edges to conform to the shapes of the flowers. The back has a place where you could slip a stick into it to hold it up. So maybe it was from a vendor display. It's colorful. I'm going to put it in the outer, protected area of our shed where I hung the metal baskets found last time. It'll perk up the area during the winter.

Years ago I found something similar. It was a piece of wood cut and painted like an xmas basket filled with poinsettia. I always figured it was a store display. No wording on it or the one from today.

And I found a large basket for 1/2 price. Nothing collectible. I deadhead lots of flowers every few days and use old plastic grocery bags. Now that I have cloth bags for shopping I wanted something reusable to gather up the cuttings. I like the idea of using a basket out in the yard. All I need is a straw hat and I can make gardening videos. Eat your heart out, Martha. lol!

1. I've had zero luck at the thrift shops lately, but I hit the jackpot today at the dump.

I found a funky golf gadget and when I polished it I found it was Gorham Sterling. One on ebay recently sold for $177! I still haven't quite figured out how it's supposed to work, but it'll be hitting ebay soon so I don't really care. Also found a cute, old, copper teapot and a couple of books about Chinese porcelain.

4. What Goodwill misses

It's odd what the Goodwill's mess up on, pricing wise. I went to one the other day and saw a bunch of nice DVD's in their glass case for $6.99 and up, probably way too much to pay. But then, sitting out by the records, where I always go, was an 8 DVD Time Life set of Grand Ole Opry videos, still factory sealed from Time Life, and marked only $5.99.

I didn't know much about this set but figured it was well worth the price and that I wouldn't mind watching it myself. But when i got home, I found out it's an easy sell on eBay for $65 and my copy is already sold.

Go figure.

3. I like that basket idea

I've got several big ones around. They would be great for hauling clippings around.

Besides the glass, I had a fun week-end. Although I did get an old cruet set with caddy. I'm going to take pics of a couple things because they're just so funky. I got an old coloring book from the Tea Garden at Golden Gate Park. A little Suzuki wind-up rabbit. A Boerner julienne slicer for a quarter. A big spice rack with 20 spice containers for $5. An old 57-59 corningware dish with the white lid, that I never knew existed until I saw it. And I got these funky old squeak toys that the woman said she bought when she was in Germany. This was the big 100+ houses sale, so I'm thinking a lot of leftovers went to the local thrifts. I'm going to go tomorrow and see.

5. The Corningware dish sounds interesting

I like finding usable Pyrex, too. I found a little oval one with the lid and I use it all the time since it fits our small microwave.

I got a bunch of Corelle supper dishes pretty cheap a while back. One batch was a Christmas pattern and the other is a cheery summer color scheme. I can get so many into just one slot of the cabinet dish caddy since they're so thin. And as I get older I like how light they are. I love our heavy cowboy pattern set and the apple Francisican dishes. But we use the Corelle almost every day.

I was surprised to see that our ARC was reorganized. And I think I like the new setup. Most of the rows run parallel to the front of the store instead of perpendicular to it. They moved the paintings & prints back a little around a corner instead of being right up front. There's more room to maneuver in the new spot.

Good luck at the thrift! Hopefully they're the beneficiary of the leftovers from that massive neighborhood sale. I wish there was a sale like that around here. I could park my car somewhere nearby and bring my old fashioned grocery cart! You know - that sounds like a dream one of us would have. :D I'd have to pack a lunch as that could be a whole day affair.
