Antiques & Collecting Newsletter Volume 13, Number 4 October 1, 2008 Ron McCoy, editor http://collectingbuzz.com
Ahhh, it's autumn! It's our favorite season of the year. Well, of course, every season is a "favorite" when that time of year rolls around. But there is something about fall that screams ROADTRIP! There are beautiful autumnal landscapes to be found almost anywhere in the country and it's a perfect time to combine the outdoors with the automobile (if you can afford the gas).
“Autumn is a time for reflection, or a certain nostalgia for things that are over—intimations of mortality. We see such real gloriousness in nature, and know that that gloriousness is a prelude or harbinger of winter to come.” (author unknown)
Enjoy your October, happy leaf-peeping, and have a spooky, kooky, creepy, fun and safe Halloween!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WORLD'S GREATEST HALLOWEEN COSTUMES http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2003/costumes
This campy collection of costumes is fun to see. The right blend of creativity and design always wows your pals, but the old-school costumes on this site definitely pack a pumpkin-laced punch. You can feast your eyes on some of the most horrific pop-culture costume choices ever manufactured. With sections devoted to always-popular comic book characters and creepily rendered famous folks, it may inspire you to begin for this year's festivities.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FRANKOMA - AN AMERICAN CLASSIC POTTERY http://www.frankoma.com
Frankoma Pottery is a collectible brand of clay dinnerware that has been around for 75 years. It's still a big seller among antique collectors, and the brand has hundreds of fans around the globe. Clay for the pottery is dug from a hill in Sapulpa, OK and most of the products are made by hand.
In August, 2008, Joe Ragosta bought Frankoma from Det and Crystal Merryman who had purchased it in 2005. Ragosta plans to rejuvenate the sometimes struggling factory by streamlining the manufacturing process and cutting down on waste. Basically, he wants to build on the past with updated designs and colors. His purchase includes the 75,000 square foot factory, showroom, seven acres of property and the Frankoma brand.
In recent years, the company has tried to broaden the appeal of the pottery line through promotions with Paula Dean on the Food Network, and Frankoma has been featured on "The Price is Right." Ragosta will add museum space to provide a place for collectors to display some of their prized Frankoma pieces.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VINTAGE WEDDING http://www.vintagewedding.com
Something old, something new, something...really old. VintageWedding.com (yes, it's an e-commerce site, but we suspect they won't mind if you just browse) suggests a whole new take on the "traditional" wedding. This site features photo albums of gowns, veils, and lingerie in the cuts and colors Grandma or even Great-Great Grandma might have worn, with loads of interesting vintage-finery factoids.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STAMP HONORS BETTE DAVIS http://tinyurl.com/4pzgpp
"She did it the hard way." That's how Bette Davis wanted to be remembered, and a new U.S. postage stamp honoring her does that image justice. The 42-cent commemorative stamp, released last month in Boston, features a portrait of Davis as she appeared in the 1950 film "All About Eve," in which she played Margo Channing, an aging stage actress battling to save her career as a younger woman schemes to replace her.
~~~~~~~~~~~ CARHENGE http://www.carhenge.com
A replication of Stonehenge, England's ancient mystical alignment of stones that chart the sun and moon phases, can be found just north of Alliance, Nebraska. Created from vintage American-made automobiles, it towers over the plains of Nebraska. Thirty-eight automobiles were placed to assume the same proportions as Stonehenge with the circle measuring approximately 96 feet in diameter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ELVIS AND PRISCILLA COLLECTIBLE DOLLS http://tinyurl.com/5bed2d
Mattel, the maker of Barbie, has produced the first-ever Elvis and Priscilla Presley dolls. The dolls are wearing replica outfits of what the Presleys wore on their wedding day in Las Vegas in 1967. The Elvis doll is dressed in a black paisley print tuxedo with boutonniere and black boots. Priscilla's doll is wearing a gown of white chiffon and satin, with tiara and veil.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ IN THE 'NAC http://www.farmersalmanac.com
Since the days of the early Romans, almanacs have reflected a way of life. Their calculations and information were first written on temple walls and later on papyrus brought over from Egypt. In printed form, almanacs became very popular in England around the 15th century and spilled over in the colonies in 1639. The first American Almanac was printed in Massachusetts. The 2009 edition of the 192-year-old Farmers’ Almanac hit the newsstands in late August, and within its pages you’ll not only find a forecast for a cold winter (“Numb’s the word!”) but also how you can learn how to dry gourds and get a recipe for hot buttered apple cider. The words of the Almanac's founder, Robert B. Thomas, guide them still: "Our main endeavor is to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ATLANTIQUE CITY http://www.atlantiquecity.com
