The bad news: it's painted red and has a couple of chunks out of it.

2. Thanks. That looks like an interesting book. The article mentions
a whole lot of potters I'm always looking for. I've been searching for a piece of Grueby for years and I couldn't believe my lousy luck to finally find something in this horrible condition. If it had just been the paint, it would have been okay, but this poor piece is too far gone to do much with. Does anyone have any idea what I should ask for it as a restoration project? I was thinking maybe $30 - $35, but I haven't got a clue.

3. Have you tried to remove the paint?
Maybe start with ammonia and then try a little paint thinner if that doesn't work. It wouldn't look too bad with just that one chunk out of the rim.

4. I did get most of the paint scrubbed off it, but it's got the chunk gone
and a couple of giant chips. At this point I'm just congratulating myself on finding a piece of Grueby in any condition. I thought it would never happen. Maybe next time it'll be one of the large vases that sell for thousands . . . hopefully without chips.
