...which has always been at my mom's house, because she gets more traffic than I do, she swears it will be "the last one ever." But next year comes, and I have more stuff, and she has more stuff, so we hold another one. I'm the one that puts it all together, anyway, so her only real complaint is the disruption and clutter over a weekend.
It's a convenient way to unload things that are too big or too complicated to sell online. For instance I prefer to sell clothing and shoes at a garage sale as opposed to eBay, so people can look at it in person and decide for themselves whether it will fit, whether it's in acceptable condition, etc. People's evaluation of what's in "good condition" when it comes to clothing is highly individualized, I've found.
Sorry to hear you had stuff stolen - that's really low. People are desperate, I guess, but that's no excuse. It's not as though they're stealing food.
