so now I'm losing money on eBay
Sales are nearly flat.

Does anyone know where eBay sales figures are posted? I'd like to know what the site as a whole is doing.

Is it just me?

1. I don't think they dare to put up the sales figures.
I was about to start listing in the auction format again since it usually picks up after Labor Day, but your post doesn't make me feel too positive about it. I know I search certain categories for items connected to the town where my booth is (for resale) and hardly anything seems to sell in them. I miss the old ebay. No more selling ice cubes to Eskimos.

2. one category that I think is pretty hot...
....is mixology. The cocktail culture is extremely strong worldwide, and vintage recipe books and gadgets are selling well. I noted a guy in Spain buying and selling the vintage booklets for shockingly big prices. Hundreds of dollars.

So I'll keep my eye out for that sort of thing.

3. Thanks for the heads up! I knew about cocktail shakers, but
had no idea about the recipe booklets. I can't imagine how many I must have passed up over the years. (Already planning a trip to the thrift store to plow through the cook booklets.)

8. be aware....
....that asking prices on some items are screaming high and the items are not selling. So be sure to make that distinction. But that item I showed in the last post did sell for that price.

6. grasswire you seem to know the scoop

and sorry we haven't been around busy with relatives. Anyway, what is up with Pay Pal? I went to ebay to buy a "buy it now" item and even though forever from the get go - which has been years - I have stipulated that I want funds to come out of my bank account unless I say otherwise, Pay Pal went ahead and put this on my Pay Pal card which I did not want.

When I was doing the transaction I stopped several times before concluding it and double checked that I had stipulated this payment was to come from my bank account. Finally, because this was a "Pay Now" item I concluded the transaction, but notified Pay Pal immediately.

When I emailed them they just point blank lied to me and said oh payments are always automatically put on your Pay Pal card, which has NEVER BEEN THE CASE BEFORE in the past six years I've been using Pay Pal.

There is a good reason for me NOT wanting this on the Pay Pal card, their interest rates are ridiculous. Why should I pay those rates?

So even though I did not approve this, they went ahead and did it anyway and refuse to fix it. Seems very dishonest to me.

Thks for your help and sorry if this is off topic.

9. The Pay Pal credit card
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 06:44 PM by Harry Pierce
Even though I have clearly marked that payments for items are to be automatically taken out of my bank account and only to use the credit card when I say so, they charged my Pay Pal credit card without my permission.(As you know, you have another credit card i.e. Visa, etc. to back up your bank account)

It's pretty bad, they are really offensive and will not help and keep telling me that ANYTHING bought at ebay automatically goes on the Pay Pal credit card, which is just ridiculous.

So anyway, I know it is a hassle but I am getting nowhere with these people. Now they want me to phone their offices, no way. they could have easily corrected the error that they made by taking the money out of my bank account and refunding the money to my credit card, but they will not and persist in telling me these are the new rules.

I'm going to file a complaint at consumer affairs because this is a scam - that's all I can do. I think it is GE that runs their banking, and they have a terrible reputation, big cons. And now, lucky me, I get to pay outrageous interest rates on something I never approved... but last night I googled Pay Pal complaints in and it was a real eye opener, these people have a very bad reputation and I suppose they just figure people won't say anything while they laugh all the way to the bank.

But I still like ebay.

I think Pay Pal are old George Bush banker friends, I really do.

This really happened BTW, I'm not just beating up Pay Pal. Thxs for listening.
