May Antique Newsletter
Hmm. A banjo museum?

Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 14, Number 12
May 1, 2010
Ron McCoy, editor
http://collectingbuzz.com

Ah, it's May Day! Although we're not actually dancing around a maypole
today, we are happy that this time of year marks the end of a most
uncomfortable winter. Alas, daylight has rapidly increased and the
warming of spring has caused new plant growth to "spring forth," giving
the season its name.

Mother's Day in the U.S. falls on Sunday, May 9. There’s still time to
surprise Mom with the perfect gift. From traditional gifts like jewelry
and flowers to unusual picks like electronics and software, check out
the following link for ideas from our friends at Amazon.com:

FILM ARTIFACTS SAVED
http://www.eastmanhouse.org

Technicolor, a color-movie pioneer, is donating filmmaking artifacts to
George Eastman House to round out the New York museum's trove of
original reels of movie classics such as "Gone with the Wind" and "The
Wizard of Oz." The gift of rare cameras, printers, drawings and
documents detailing the creative process behind Technicolor movies
produced from 1915 to 1974 solidifies the Rochester film and photography
museum's status as the world's largest research institution for
film-technology scholars. The Technicolor company's archives, kept in
vaults in Los Angeles, might have been junked if the museum hadn't
stepped in and rescued them.

HELIUM DELIVERS

Helium delivers advice via user-created content where folks post their
perspective and then others read what they have to say. We found the
section on Antiques & Collecting to be rather interesting. The way it
works is you read a couple of articles, rate them and that allows the
best writing to rise to the top. This site is not to be used a
definitive reference source but it's a fun read.

RETURN TO MAYBERRY
http://www.AndyGriffithMuseum.com

The Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, N.C. provides a permanent place
for the world's largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia. The
museum is located next door to the Andy Griffith Playhouse, a half-mile
from the actor's boyhood home. Griffith gave many of the items,
including the iconic signs from the "The Andy Griffith Show" courthouse
doors that read: "Sheriff" and "Justice of the Peace." There are also
mementos from Griffith's movies and his music career. Check out the
PHOTO section for a peek into the museum.

THE MOB MUSEUM
http://www.themobmuseum.org

The city of Las Vegas bought the 1933 federal courthouse and post office
from the federal government for $1 in 2002. The downtown building, one
of the oldest in Southern Nevada, is currently being meticulously
restored, down to the original coffered ceiling and crown moldings, to
become Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. The museum, set to
open next year, will have 17,000 square feet of exhibits including an
interactive courtroom in which visitors can get finger printed. It will
also include the brick wall from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre,
roughly 700 objects and extensive exhibits on law enforcement efforts
against the Mafia. Check out the slide show at the bottom of the front
page of the website.

SAVING THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN
http://www.savehollywoodland.org

In 1923 the Hollywood Sign was built above Los Angeles as a temporary
advertisement for publisher Harry Chandler's Hollywoodland real estate
development. Though the years it has been restored or refurbished three
times because it has become such a potent symbol of the entertainment
industry. A group of Chicago investors put the property where the sign
sits on the market two years ago for $22 million and it was zoned to
build luxury homes. The Trust for Public Land announced last month that
donors worldwide raised enough money to buy and protect the 138 acres
behind the world-famous sign. It will now be forever protected by adding
it to Griffith Park.

ARE YOU A SPEEDCUBER?
http://www.rubiks.com

One of the most popular puzzles in the world, the Rubik's Cube, turns 30
this year. It was introduced in 1980 at toy fairs in London, Paris,
Nuremberg and New York. Zsa Zsa Gabor hosted the Hollywood launch party.
Since its launch, more than 350 million Cubes have been sold worldwide.
The world record for solving a Rubik's Cube is 7.08 seconds.

Sketch to Screen: The Art of Hollywood Costume Design. The exhibition

MISFITS OF MOTORDOM
http://www.petersen.org/default.cfm?docid=1070

An exhbition called "What Were They Thinking? The Misfits of Motordom"
at Los Angeles' Petersen Automotive Museum shows just how far afield
some inventive automakers strayed in their attempts to cash in. Although
intending to revolutionize the industry they clearly missed the
motoring-public mark. Some of these vehicles make the 1958 Edsel look
positively stellar.
