From there you can learn what types of furniture you like: Duncan Fyfe? Heppelwhite? Mission? Stickley?

edit: It's easier to compare/contrast styles IMO, looking at the same item in different styles: sofas with sofas, chairs with chairs, end tables with end tables, etc.

Forgot to say I've also learned quite a bit watching Antiques Roadshow on PBS. The two twin brothers both specialize in Colonial and early American furniture. I just love it when they get a hold of a Boston highboy made around the time of the Revolution, then have to tell the owner that the thing is worth maybe 25K because they had it refinished (No NO!) In original condition with original finish, crackled with fireplace smoke and all, worth upwards of 100K or 150K!

Lee and Leslie do a great job of teaching about what they look for and what makes a great example of a particular style piece vs a so so piece.

4. I found a copy of their book.

Their recounting of major finds and adventures. It was quite informative and entertaining too!

5. The Keno's book is really good. I've tried my hardest to get interested

in furniture, but it just doesn't hit me. At least the old, old pieces. I do get a kick out of finding funky mid-century modern pieces and I'd love to find a piece of Stickley furniture.
