Mystery Pottery
Here's another offering from my shelf of unknowns. Last summer I found about a half dozen pastel and gold cup and saucer sets with a matching cobalt blue sugar and creamer at a yard sale at a home in the pricier part of town. They appear, under the glaze, to be red clay and the name "Ferrel" in script is on the bottom. I'm coming up empty on identifying the stuff, but I'm still looking because it's such good quality. Has anyone seen anything like this? Sorry the photo is a little dark.

1. Here's the info on it for you
Edited on Sun Dec-09-07 08:57 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Scanned this from my
Lehner's Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain, and Clay
(really THE book of authority on US marks)

After reading the info, you may find more clues as to which pottery company he designed these for as he worked many places.

From p. 147

But I could be wrong. Let me know if the sig on your piece matches the one I scanned or not

3. I have Lehner's, too, and decided it wasn't Frank Ferrel,
although I could be wrong. The pieces don't look anything at all like either Roseville or Weller. Your post gave me an idea, though. Maybe I should send a picture to David Rago's auction site and double check the name.

6. Am wondering if that mark
is from a store...meaning, it's a store name that had the dinnerware made for it by a major company such as Edwin M. Knowles, or some such.
