Instrument ID: Cornet? Trumpet?

I know sci-fi collectibles pretty well, and I can research most everything else, but I draw a blank when it comes to the intricacies of brass instruments. I came into one for re-sale, but can't tell from online sources and pictures whether this is a trumpet or a cornet (or something else altogether, perhaps). I'd certainly like to call it the right thing before I write up an auction desc! :) Any knowledgeable musicians out there?

1. My husband, who plays trumpet and cornet,

says it's a shepherd's hook cornet.

Is there a manufacturer and a serial number? I know he was able to go online and look up the cornet my father had in high school before World War II.

3. It's a couple of decades old...

...because I have the sales receipt from the previous owner, otherwise I wouldn't know how to tell. The only number I can see on it that I assume is a serial number is on the middle valve, 657737 ML, and the manufacturer is Bundy/The Selmer Company.

There's a link to look up a serial number but I didn't see anything that fit exactly. You might also be able to call a local music store -- the kind that specializes in band instruments. Good luck!

5. Coronet-short and tubby. Trumpet-long and slim and sure not stumpy

Maybe the p.t. is another name for cornet?

9. No, they're different.

My husband says a cornet has a graduated cylinder than gets wider as it approaches the bell. A trumpet has a cylinder with the same diameter until you get to the bell.

Hope that makes sense -- he's half-asleep right now. :)
