Murders of leaders of organizations of Colombian displaced people
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 11:33 AM by Judi Lynn
haven't been mentioned by corporate media. This is a google translation of a United Nations statement:
UN agency condemns murder of displaced people in Arauca and Bolivar
The Office in Colombia of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) condemned the five homicides committed against leaders and members of organizations of displaced people occurs in the cities of Cartagena and Arauquita in the last week.

On Nov. 28 in the town of Arauquita, Arauca, was killed Carlos Rodolfo Cabrera Huertas, a leader of the Association of Displaced Persons of Arauquita (ASDENAR), who also served as Secretary of the Municipal Committee of Displaced Persons.

The murder occurs in a context of violence and intimidation against displaced people and organizations who represent them in that region. The fact generated fears about the existence of strategies of persecution against them.

In another equally notorious fact, the December 1, in the neighborhood Pozón the District of Cartagena, Bolivar, the couple were murdered Alfredo Jaraba and Mary Luz Lopez, Yesenia Jaraba their children (18 years) and Luis Eduardo Jaraba (21 years) , And wounded his daughter JEIMY Jaraba (16 years). The victims belonged to the association ANDAS, an affiliate of the National Coordination of Displaced Persons, NDA.

Since December 2006, in unison with several organizations, our agencies have warned about the deteriorating security conditions in the settlements of displaced people in Cartagena and nearby areas. Members of the League of Displaced Women in Bolivar and other organizations have been victims of threats and harassment this year.

These and other facts that are still reported to OHCHR and UNHCR, within their mandates, reveal dynamic multifaceted encouraged by various actors. This surpasses often institutional capacities currently used by the Colombian state to protect this population group.

UNHCR and OHCHR urged the authorities to advance the research to the elucidation of the facts and punish those responsible, and to reassess the impact of the programs in place to protect leaders of displaced population.

UNHCR and OHCHR express their support and solidarity to the families of victims and members of the organizations to which they belonged.
