Brazil to expel 98 foreign NGOs operating in the country
2009-02-18 12:21:04

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Ninety-eight foreign Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) that failed to register with the Justice Ministry, will be forbidden from operating in Brazil, government authorities said Tuesday.

There are 170 NGOs operating in the country but only 72 have completed the mandatory registration ahead of a Feb. 2 deadline.

The measure, carried out under a ministry decree issued last year, was aimed at avoiding bio-piracy, illegal exploitation of natural resources and violation of Brazil's sovereignty, especially in the Amazon Rainforest region. The government was afraid of the influence of economic and religious foreign groups in the area.

The low registration figures have confirmed the government's suspicion that many foreign NGOs operate in the country "in an obscure way," said National Justice Secretary Romeu Tuma Jr.

1. Wow! I guess the humanitarian ploy is the oldest one.
That's a LOT of organizations.

2. You might remember Venezuela expelled a group of "missionaries"
a few years ago, which opened up a terrific conversation in G.D., concerning the previous, and frequent use, over the years, of 'missionaries' by the CIA to get into countries in ways anyone connected to the government couldn't.

I'm sure you remember the story published a few years ago about an African country discovering some American "missionaries" who just happened to be overloaded with tons of weapons, and ammunition, prepared for full scale warfare! They lost no time getting those scumballs in jail, and it's only fitting they did.

Sneaking people into countries under the guise of sending missionaries, philanthropists, benign, benevolent "helpers" of mankind has been a crude, cynical stunt they've used for ages, trying to take advantage of people's gullibility, and wish to be able to believe in actual good figures in the world.

Even here in the States, Native Americans were rounded up and sent to organized church boarding schools, separated from their parents, and treated like human garbage, as if they could NEVER be accepted by "decent" society without pounding them into line as children, first, including enormous physical battery disguised as "discipline." Sad, sad, SAD tale of what happens to people without anyone or any system powerful to protect them.

Seeing Brazil reach out and say, "Oh, NO you don't" to this age old predation upon the unsuspecting is very encouraging, isn't it?
