Peru hits back at Bolivia CIA conspiracy claim
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 09:25 — tupaj
LIMA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Peru's government has protested against Bolivian President Evo Morales' claims that the Peruvian authorities had been part of a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) "conspiracy," Peru's foreign minister revealed Tuesday.

Morales' remarks were "unacceptable in the extreme," said Jose Garcia Belaunde, adding that the Peruvian government had sent a note of protest to Morales Monday.

The Peruvian government last October requested the extradition of Walter Chavez, a Peruvian and former advisor to Morales accused of being a member of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MTRA),a rebel group in Peru.

Morales said the Peruvian judicial authorities' extradition request had made them part of a CIA conspiracy.

According to Morales, the United States "is using some authorities, perhaps Peruvian or Bolivian, to punish" his former advisor.

The Supreme Court of Bolivia has turned down the request for the extradition, saying Chavez is allowed to seek political refugee under Bolivian law.
