Chávez: The government is in debt to the Caracazo victims

Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez took part on Friday in a mass to honor the casualties of the Caracazo and said that "the Bolivarian state is in debt to the victims of February 27th, 1989."

"The Bolivarian state should make bigger efforts in search of justice in the face of that assault, not only in terms of claiming the issue as a historical event of fair rebellion of the poor, but also in search of justice to find the perpetrators," said the head of state.

He recalled that state authorities issued a bench warrant against then President Carlos Andrés Pérez, "but he is protected by the US government; he is the first one who should pay for the genocide."

Chávez also put the blame on Metropolitan Mayor Antonio Ledezma, who was the Caracas governor in 1989. "He is mostly responsible for that assault on the Venezuelan people, because he led the Metropolitan Police."

1. Speaking of Carlos Andres Perez

El Universal story neglected to mention this tidbit. (Last I heard CAP, who was known in Venezuela as LocoVen, was living in Puerto Rico.)

CARACAS.—Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has repeated his request to the United States government for the extradition of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles and former President Carlos Andrés Pérez, who was responsible for the Caracazo massacre, PL reported.

2. Never heard this, but it makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
I have heard he also has homes in New York and in Miami. Just looked to see if I could find any photos of him in Miami, found this one:

Here's a photo of his mistress (and former secretary) Cecilia Matos:

8 months ago: Cecilia Matos, wife of Venezuela's former President Carlos
Andres Perez, holds up a family picture in her Miami condo, Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

You remember he was impeached for massive corruption, and made off with hundreds of millions. He and his then mistress/secretary were known to have stashed it all over the place in many different banks. He had far more money than he could have EVER have earned or inherited in his lifetime. No doubt Venezuelans would like their money back!

I noticed a photo in that jumble of C.A.P. photos on the table looks like him with George H. W. Bush. Interesting.
