Former Bolivian ministers seek asylum in Peru
Former Bolivian ministers seek asylum in Peru
May 9, 2009, 2:27 pm

LIMA (AFP) - Three ministers who served under exiled former Bolivian president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada have sought asylum in Peru, according to Lima's foreign minister.

Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde said one Bolivian minister had been granted asylum and two other applications were under consideration. He did not give the applicants' names.

The former ministers left Bolivia after the judiciary there announced proceedings would be launched against them starting May 18.

They are accused of aiding the killing of 65 people, carried out by military and police forces seeking to crush a popular rebellion against the government in October 2003.

The riots ousted Bolivian president Sanchez de Lozada, who has since lived in exile in the United States.

Over 500 people were also wounded in the violence.

Officials in La Paz said four former ministers had fled the country: Mirtha Quevedo, ex-minister for popular participation; Victor Hugo, education; Guido Anez, agriculture; and Yerko Kukoc, interior.

Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry did not identify who had asked for asylum but said Kukoc was not among them.

Quevedo confirmed to a Bolivian television station that she was in Lima while awaiting "guarantees for a fair trial" in Bolivia.

All four worked for Sanchez de Lozada, 78, who served two terms as president of Bolivia, from 1993-1997 and 2002-2003.

He has been charged in Peru with genocide as well as for embezzling public funds.

In late 2008, Bolivia submitted a request for his extradition from the United States.

scoundrels who have looted their countries. But what else could we expect from corrupt leaders like Alan Garcia, friend Bush Jr?

Wouldn't it be something to see the Associated Pukes, or the Wall Street Urinal, or the Miami Hairy describe rightwing SOBs the way they describe good leftist leaders, i.e., "Hugo Chavez, friend of Fidel Castro...".

Say "Alan Garcia, friend of fascist torturer and mass murderer, George Bush," or "Alvaro Uribe, the go-to guy for the Medellin Cartel in his early career, now chummy with the Bush Cartel...".

Or, another of their demonizing phrases: "Self-styled leftist Hugo Chavez...". How about "Self-styled fascist dictator George Bush Jr..."?

When Hell freezes over, I guess.

2. Right-wing control of every part of corporate media reveals itself constantly.
It comes through that only the right-wing position will be allowed here and everywhere. It's the standard. Everything else is to be pointed out, underlined, targeted, and vilified.

The reason might be that so many people's personal lives are spent in upheaval, emotionally at sea, in conflict with others, and with the circumstances of their own lives, leaving them very little room to focus on anything beyond their daily fight for emotional survival. Could be they count on people's immersion in the "rat race," interpersonal conflicts, to keep them so preoccupied they never have time to actually see what has happened, and to realize what it means.

This isn't pretty. It's so blatant you'd think everyone would have noticed already. It would be heavenly seeing them going after a """Self-styled fascist dictator...."" day after day, year in, year out. We know that's not going to happen, not in a million fascist years.

Peru has granted asylum to Mirtha Quevedo, the leader of the Bolivian opposition, who has fled prosecution for a bloody clamp down on a popular uprising in 2003. Sixty people were killed in the clamp down and around 500 others injured.

The uprising was against the then president Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada,
Ms Quevedo, who served as a minister under the former president fears she will not receive a fair trail.

In 2003 president Sánchez de Lozada fled to the United States. Two other former ministers, Jorges Torres and Yerko Kukoc, have also fled to Peru.
They have requested asylum, which up to now has not been granted. The trial against the three former ministers begins next week.

5. Evo: Alan Gracia = George W. Bush
Edited on Mon May-11-09 07:10 PM by rabs

Evo today compared Alan Garcia to G.W. Bush, saying both gave shelter to criminals.

Evo said Garcia was not following accepted international norms in granting shelter to former Bolivian ministers who fled to Peru recently and are asking for political asylum. He asked that Garcia expel them.

-----------------

“Lamento mucho que el comportamiento del presidente Alan García (sea) igual que del presidente Bush (que) protegía, daba garantías a los delincuentes, no solamente bolivianos sino de Latinoamérica ...

"I lament very much that the behavior of president Alan Garcia (is) equal to (that of) president Bush (who) protected, gave rights to criminals, not only from Bolivia (reference to Sanchez de Lozada) but from Latin America ..."
