La Paz, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian government approved a decree that establishes May 24 as the Day of National Battle Against Racial Discrimination in remembrance of the outrage and humiliation of campesinos in Sucre.
On this day, last year, armed right wing groups unleashed a massacre of farmers and indigenous peoples marching to the southern city to demonstrate their support of President Evo Morales.
According to the Minister of Justice Celima Torrico, the decision corresponds to the Political Constitution of the State and is in conformity with international agreements, above all, with the declaration of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
The Bolivian declaration also corresponds to UN regulations that set March 21 as the International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination, after police aggression of pacifists demonstrating in South Africa in 1960, explained Torrico.
The attack of campesinos in Sucre last year was done by radical right wing groups and was condemned by several international institutions.
This time, some of the victims were taken as hostages and taken by violent groups of young men to the Plaza 25 de Mayo where they were stripped of their clothing and forced to repeat racist phrases.
According to investigations the aggressors had ties with the Institutional Committee for the Demand of Autonomy and the transference of State powers to Sucre.
Next Sunday will be an event of redress in this city in which the campesinos will issue a declaration of the National Day of Combat against Racial Discrimination.
