Quotes From Hugo Chavez’s Copenhagen Speech (Video)
Posted by John Romano in Politics on December 17, 2009

COPENHAGEN (YBH.ME) – Below are some of the more interesting quotes from Hugo Chavez’s 20 minute speech at the U.N. Climate Change conference in Copenhagen today.

Mr. Chavez was warmly received and some of the quotes below received enthusiastic applause from the audience in the hall:

“If the climate was a bank would have already saved it.”

“The destructive model of Capitalism is eradicating life”

“I don’t think Obama is here yet. He got the Nobel Peace Prize almost the same day as he sent 30,000 soldiers to kill innocent people in Afghanistan.

not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really and imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships”

“I don’t think Obama is here yet. He got the Nobel Peace Prize almost the same day as he sent 30,000 soldiers to kill innocent people in Afghanistan.”

“Our revolution seeks to help all people…socialism, the other ghost that is probably wandering around this room, that’s the way to save the planet, capitalism is the road to hell….let’s fight against capitalism and make it obey us.”

Mr. Chavez reportedly received a standing ovation for his last remark.

Video of Mr. Chavez’s remarks:

This one has a translator, and lasts approximately 7 minutes, follows a speech by a Mali speaker, which uses the first 4 minutes.

No translator:

5. Your quotes are missing important words--cuz you didn't take out the brackets.
Mr. Chavez was warmly received and some of the quotes below received enthusiastic applause from the audience in the hall:

“If the climate was a bank (the west) would have already saved it.”

“The destructive model of Capitalism is eradicating life”

“I don’t think Obama is here yet. He got the Nobel Peace Prize almost the same day as he sent 30,000 soldiers to kill innocent people in Afghanistan.

(Copenhagen is) not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really and imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships”

---------------------------------------------------

"Let's fight capitalism and make it obey us" is a great line--applicable to a lot of situations!

4. Chavez gets standing ovation in Copenhagen blaming capitalism for destroying the planet
I'm going to post this as an OP. First I'm going to look for a better article. This article from The Australian is full of snark at the poor countries in the opening paragraphs, and ends with snark. But then there's this...(which also includes snark...)

(SNIP)

Then President Chavez brought the house down.

When he said the process in Copenhagen was “not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really and imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships” he got a rousing round of applause.

When he said there was a “silent and terrible ghost in the room” and that ghost was called capitalism, the applause was deafening.

But then he wound up to his grand conclusion – 20 minutes after his 5 minute speaking time was supposed to have ended and after quoting everyone from Karl Marx to Jesus Christ - “our revolution seeks to help all people…socialism, the other ghost that is probably wandering around this room, that’s the way to save the planet, capitalism is the road to hell....let’s fight against capitalism and make it obey us.” He won a standing ovation.

And the Ethiopian President Meles Zenawi – who made a sensible and considered and detailed proposal about how to get financing to help climate change adaptation and mitigation in poor countries? He was far less enthusiastically received.

7. Complete speech (Spanish) in three parts

Thanks to Judi who posted the first link upthread.

Folks here fluent in Spanish will enjoy listening because all the nuances are there to give a complete portrait of the arguments Chavez made as well as how the speech was delivered (humor, applause etc.)

(Liked the part where he said "If the climate were a bank, capitalists from rich nations would have already saved it."

9. De nada ...

Noted over on the big forum someone was asking for video. If you think it's worth it, maybe you can copy the links for posting there cuz noted you were in the thick of the fray. :toast:

But don't know how many of the anti-chavistas there would understand what he says. :nopity:

11. Wow! President Chavez acknowledged the protesters, the youth
that were being excluded, that were outside. That's awesome. And he got them a hand.

14. Here's the full text of Chavez's speech in English. If you don't understand Spanish,
you can watch the vid and follow along in the English text.

16. Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" could have given that speech today in Copenhagen

Thanks for this, saw it many years ago and had forgotten.

Amazing that what he said in the 1966 movie "His Excellency" would have been so apt today, subbing the Cold War for Climate Change.

Like the part where he address the "Ambassador of Dolaronia" and where he says, "Why do we need cars when we are still walking around barefoot" and "Why do we need tanks and weapons when there are not enough schools." (These ideas were around 44 years ago !!)

The plot of the Cold War comedy:

In Pepeslavia, a powerful Communist nation of the East bloc, the tiny Republic of Los Cocos is on the verge of assuming decisive importance on the international stage. There is going to be an assembly of all the members of the international organization to discuss the fate of the world, and the vote of the tiny nation of Los Cocos will decide which bloc triumphs.

(for non-Spanish readers, "cocos" = coconuts)

18. My grandmother used to take me with her to the movies
in the Mission to see Cantinflas and Jorge Negrete, Maria Felix (sp?). She bought me candy to shut me up so I would sit still and let her watch. Smart Mami. She loved politics and besides novels, wrote political commentary. I miss being able to run things by her.

She would agree with you.
