Zelaya opts for temporary residence in Mexico

Ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya intends to establish a temporary residence in Mexico, but return to his home country in the future, his close supporter said.

"Zelaya plans to live temporarily in Mexico, and return to his homeland in the future," Cesar Ham, leader of the socialist Democratic Unification Party of Honduras told reporters on Friday.

Zelaya, who is expected to leave Honduras on January 27, earlier said that he would not seek political asylum in Mexico, and will leave Honduras only as the head of state.

The de facto authorities said Zelaya could leave Honduras only to seek political asylum and they would not authorize Zelaya's safe passage to Mexico unless he resigns.

4. Not too sure Cesar Ham is to be believed

After reading your post, went over to check the golpista media and opposition El Libertado. There is nothing about Z going to Mexico. In fact, couple of days ago, his unofficial spokesman Tome said Z would not decide until Jan. 27, his last day as the elected president.

The accord signed on Tuesday in Santo Domingo does NOT specifically say Z can or cannot return to Honduras. But the golpista attorney general Rubi yesterday added a Catch-22 to Z's leaving. He said the "charges" against Z remain in effect. There are also reports in Teguz that there are some mightly pissed off people at Lobo for pledging to allow Z to leave the country.

I personally would like to see Z settle in the United States. As far as I know, Hil and company have not revoked his visa and it would be a beautiful, political cream-pie in Hil's face if he did. }(

You may have seen that yesterday, on a nationwide TV and radio hookup, goriletti announced that he was stepping down immediately from all his "presidential" functions. Apparently the government is now being run by a "council of ministers" until next week.

State department spokesman Crowley today hailed goriletti's stepping down. Meanwhile, Crowley said Hil and company are still insisting on a "national unity" government and the formation of a "truth commission" as stipulated by the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord. Too late for that now, with only days before gorilobo takes over.

Also, the president of the Supreme Court is due to rule on the trial (or not) of Romeo Vasquez and five other generals on Tuesday of next week, one day before the gorilobo inauguration.

The national congress is about to pass a general amnesty for all who were involved in the coup. That should come before the inauguration too. So far the military cupula is not included, but it would be silly to think they would be put on trial.
