Argentina was celebrating a diplomatic coup today in its attempt to force Britain to accept talks on the future of the Falkland Islands, after an extraordinary two-hour meeting in Buenos Aires between Hillary Clinton and the country’s President Fernández de Kirchner.

Responding to a request from Mrs Kirchner for “friendly mediation” between Britain and Argentina, Mrs Clinton said she agreed that negotiations were a sensible way forward and offered “to encourage both countries to sit down”.

Her intervention defied Britain’s long-standing position that there should be no negotiations unless the islands’ 3,000 inhabitants asked for them.

It was hailed in Buenos Aires as a major diplomatic victory, but condemned in the Falklands. Britain insisted there was no need for mediation as long as the islanders wanted to remain British. “We don’t think that’s necessary,” a Downing Street spokesman said.

Your comments about the "rainforest Chernobly" in Ecuador--the Chevron-Texaco toxic oil spill the size of Rhode Island, which has destroyed fisheries, rivers and streams and the living of 30,000 Indigenous people in the Amazon forest--and your racist remark, that the charges against Chevron should be disregarded because they were "presented by an Indian," taint all your other comments on Latin American issues. You are an oil corporation apologist. And your remarks are so ignorant, uninformed and so like the crap put out by Chevron's 12 P.R. firms--which they hired to discredit the Indigenous who filed suit against them for damages and cleanup--that your views have no credibility whatsoever.

In fact, I advise other DUers to use my Rule No. 1 from the Bush Junta as a guide to determining the truth of your statements: To wit, whatever you assert, the opposite is the truth.

Thus, we can surmise that, since you claim that "This is very good" (Hillary Clinton involving herself in the Argentina/England dispute), it is more than likely very bad--and, if Honduras is any guide to what happens when Hillary Clinton instigates "talks"--Cristina Fernandez--the leftist president of Argentina whom the U.S. most definitely wants to oust--had better watch her back.

3. UK rejects Hillary Clinton's help in Falklands dispute

Downing Street has rejected an offer from the US to help the UK and Argentina resolve their latest dispute over the Falkland Islands.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made the offer after renewed tensions were triggered by a UK decision to drill for oil near the islands.

A spokesman for Gordon Brown said he welcomed her comments but did not think her direct involvement was necessary.

Argentina claims sovereignty over the Falklands, which it calls the Malvinas.

4. This is a very perilous course for Cristina Fernandez.

In addition to the "rule of thumb" that whatever protocol rv asserts, the opposite is the truth, we have plenty of evidence that the U.S. does not mean well to any of the leftist leaders of Latin America, especially those allied with the Bolivarians (Chavez in Venezuela, Morales in Bolivia, Correa in Ecuador)--which Fernandez is, very much so. The U.S. has furthermore gone out of its way to smear Fernandez, with that ridiculous CIA caper out of Miami (the "suitcase full of money" caper featuring the Miami mafioso "Guido" Wilson). And Hillary Clinton is on a "divide and conquer" mission in Latin America. Advertised as trying to heal the anger caused by the sneaky U.S. support of the rightwing coup in Honduras and the recent U.S./Colombia military agreement, my guess is that Clinton's mission is the opposite of that--to parade the U.S. triumph over democracy in Honduras, as a lesson to all, to ride the crest of the U.S. occupation of Colombia, as a warning to all, and to "divide and conquer" the new Latin American unity that leftist leaders have brought about, by dropping ripe plumbs here and there, for Latin Americans to scramble after--like Marie Antoinette might do to the starving peasants.

Fernandez may be smart enough to get what Argentina needs from Clinton without Argentina and Fernandez herself getting totally fucked in the process--but I would beware of hubris in that respect. The U.S. and England are solid allies and are dirty gamesters, indeed. I hope this turns out well for Argentina. They got so totally screwed by the U.S.-dominated World Bank/IMF, that they are still trying to recover. Venezuela helped them out of that disaster. But who will help them out if this turns disastrous, after Fernandez invited the U.S. to get involved?

6. Kirchner Directs Foreign Reserves Into Debt Payments

BUENOS AIRES—Argentine President Cristina Kirchner on Monday sidestepped stiff congressional resistance to spending foreign reserves for debt payments, issuing a pair of decrees shifting about $6.6 billion from the central bank to the Treasury.

Separately, Mrs. Kirchner, in a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asked the U.S. to mediate in Argentina's continuing dispute with the U.K. over the Falkland Islands. Mrs. Clinton appeared reluctant to commit the U.S. to anything more than a limited role.

Political opponents saw the move to shift money from the central bank as a slap in the face of the new opposition-dominated Congress, which the president inaugurated earlier in the day. The first decree allocates about $2.2 billion in foreign reserves to pay international organizations, while a second orders the central bank to hand over about $4.2 billion for other public-debt payments.

Radical Party legislator Ricardo Gil Lavedra said the president "was mocking the Congress," while dissident Peronist Felipe Solá called the moves "fraud."
