(AP) — SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - One of Latin America's most prominent contemporary writers is visiting Puerto Rico and criticized the government's decision to ban his novel from public high schools.
Carlos Fuentes says dropping "Aura" from the curriculum was an arbitrary decision that amounted to an "antidemocratic, anticultural" act.
He spoke briefly to reporters Friday before accepting an honorary doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico.
He urged professors and students to never stop learning.
Fuentes said the more educated a person is, the more education they are going to need.
At 81, Fuentes said he is still working on several books, including one about the guerrilla in Colombia.
