Rights Activists Released in Cuba

HAVANA – The three young Cuban human-rights activists who were arrested last month during an anti-government protest at the University of Havana were released over the weekend.

Luis Enrique Labrador Diaz, Eduardo Perez Flores and Michel Rodriguez Ruiz, members of the banned Independent and Democratic Cuba Party, said they were released on Saturday.

The three appeared Sunday with the Ladies in White, the movement of relatives of the 75 dissidents jailed in 2003, after the women made their habitual protest march after leaving the Santa Rita de Casia Church in Havana.

The activists were imprisoned for 20 days, accused by the authorities of “public disorder” after carrying out a protest on Aug. 16 on the stairway of the University of Havana that consisted of displaying a sheet with such slogans as “Down with the dictatorship,” “Down with hunger” and “Long live human rights,” Perez Flores and Rodriguez Ruiz told reporters.
