and a sorrowful heart welling up for the CURRENT dead teachers, trade union leaders and others slaughtered by rightwing death squads in Honduras, following the U.S. supported rightwing coup last year. The plane carrying the elected president out of the country at gunpoint stopped at the USAF base at Soto Cano, Honduras, for refueling. Then the Obama/Clinton state department came in with U.S.-taxpayer funded entities like the International Republican Institute and arranged a fake democracy with an election held under martial law, which the rightwing, of course, won. Meanwhile, thousands of protestors against this coup were brutalized by police and (U.S. funded) military forces, and the leaders of community groups, unions and others began to be picked off by death squads.
I appreciate this Onion piece satirizing U.S. hypocrisy--having the satirical president of the U.S. speak honestly about U.S. horrors in Latin America. Can't help but laugh at that, because it rips open the hypocrisy. But I would like to see something more hard-hitting about the CURRENT carnage, such as this ironical piece in old black & white photography interspersed with color photos of the bloody, shot and even beheaded bodies of current Hondurans whose only crime was to oppose the latest U.S.-supported coup against their rightful government.
