Prosecutors are seeking damages against three former soldiers and a military policeman alleged to have been involved in Operation Bandeirante, a secret paramilitary police group that rounded up leftist rebels.

They include Captain Mauricio Lopes Lima who is accused of being responsible for the torture of Ms Rousseff, who will replace President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on January 1 next year.

She was a Marxist guerrilla who was active in resisting the dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985.

After Ms Rousseff was captured in 1970 a military prosecutor labelled her the "Joan of Arc" of the guerrilla movement. She was subjected to electric shocks and beatings during nearly three years in jail.
