Garcia jumps on the gender wagon (Peru)

The APRISTA party, led by Two Breakfasts, has picked Mercedes Aráoz, a top adviser to Alan to be the party's candidate for the presidency in the elections in April 2011. She also served Garcia as a finance and economics minister.

Should the traditional APRA backers (who go back several generations) remain loyal, Mercedes Aráoz just might face Fujimori's daughter Keiko in a two-woman runoff next year.

One disgruntled APRA party official (obviously a macho man) said Mercedes should be running in a beauty contest instead of for the presidency.

Peru: Mercedes Aráoz is Apra's official presidential candidate

Former Minister of Economy and Finance Mercedes Aráoz confirmed she will run as a candidate of the governing APRA party in the 2011 presidential elections.

In a Nov. 2 interview with RPP radio network, Aráoz said she decided to run for the presidency of Peru because she believes it is time to take action and make changes for the country.

"It would be very comfortable for me to stay in the academic world and do nothing. I want to make changes to improve my country, to increase welfare and further reduce poverty," she said.

About possible coalitions, the former Minister of Economy and Finance stated that the ruling Apra party is open to talk with any political movement that has a democratic commitment and pursues a model of inclusive economic growth.

Full story here and apologize if this has already been posted. Have been out of the loop recently.
