Fidel Castro Says He Is Happy With Direction Cuba Is Going Under Brother's Leadership

(AP) HAVANA (AP) - Fidel Castro says he is happy with the direction in which Cuba is moving under the leadership of his brother Raul, his most explicit remarks to date about the sweeping economic changes the country is undergoing.

"I'm content, because the country is moving forward despite all the challenges," the bearded revolutionary icon told Cuban students in comments carried by the official Communist Party-newspaper Granma on Thursday.

The elder Castro stepped down in 2006 due to a serious illness that almost killed him. He re-emerged from four years of seclusion in July, but has rarely spoken about Cuban current events, preferring to use his appearances to warn of what he fears is a looming nuclear war pitting the United States and Israel against Iran.

Castro, 84, remains head of the Communist Party, though in his remarks to the students he gave the impression he had delegated many of his official duties to others.

1. Gerontocracy at its best
It's sublime to see the 84 year old leader of an old style communist party telling students he's happy with the way things are, as the country lurches towards who knows what under the rule of his 80 year old brother. Hopefully they'll evolve from communism and single-party rule without falling in a hole along the way.

2. Oh, surely you are so right. There are only a couple of old, old men
who have never been to the Versailles restaurant in Miami who are holding all 11 million Cubans hostage.

Darn those mean old guys! Oh, they'll probably forget how to breathe soon enough, and die, fall over, and everything will be wonderful in Cuba because then the swine the entire island threw out can rush right back and reseize the island and stink the place up all over again, and bring on the THIRD Cuban revolution.

Eventually they'll get the idea. Clearly they're not bright enough to figure it out for themselves.

Guess you'll be leaving on the Ramon Saul Sanchez flotilla when the the time comes to retake the island and "free Cuba."

I recall how happy Cubans were to see the "exiles" in the Bay of Pigs invasion. They really wanted them back, didn't they?
