Housing starts by the public sector decline 57 percent
The construction of housing units by the public and private sector faces a series of constraints. Falling public and private investments, as well as shortage of basic inputs, have curbed the completion of housing units. Therefore, Venezuelan housing starts fell 35 percent in 2010 compared to 2009.

According to data released by public and private institutions, between January and September 2010, a total of 41,500 housing units were completed, compared to 64,500 in the same period in 2009. This means that the construction of housing units continues to decline.

Downward trend
Although President Hugo Chávez has insisted in his speeches that housing construction is a personal challenge and that one of the government's priorities is the construction of housing units, data provided by executing agencies show that the number of housing units completed fell by 57 percent.

Between January and September, a total of 9,510 housing units were completed, while a total of 22,400 housing units were built in the same period in 2009, according to data published by relevant institutions.
