Haiti cholera spreading faster than predicted, UN says
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 04:22 AM by dipsydoodle
The cholera epidemic in Haiti is spreading twice as fast as had been estimated and is likely to result in hundreds of thousands of cases in the coming months, the UN says.

The UN's humanitarian co-ordinator for Haiti, Nigel Fisher, said aid agencies would have to "ratchet up" their response and send more medical staff.

The Haitian government says 1415 people are confirmed to have died.

Mr Fisher said more than 200,000 cases of infection could be recorded in the first three months instead of six months as first estimated.

1. If they c ould only have had adequate, dry housing after the earthquake,
instead of the dirt, mud, wind, and rain to struggle with day after day after day.

This only happens to poor people, since wealthy ones have so many ways to escape suffering. Very, very sad.

2. I recall reading when the earthquake occured
about the end of the island where the luxury cruises pull in and where the rich live. No mention of that now. :(

Be interesting to see what happens with their elections.

:hi:

3. Fanmi Lavalas party still banned from elections.

Of course, its the most popular Haitian political party of Aristide.

If Haitians hit the streets in support of Fanmi Lavalas and demanding the return of ousted Aristide, this is what happens.

for his life. just what Haitians are praying for I am sure.

You and some of your choir.

6. Actually, I recall the truth.
many "leftists" would prefer people in camps than in homes if it means the developer might make a dollar.

from their tent cities to another area and provided homes and jobs.

7. Gee who could have predicted this?
Must be some form of "non-traditional" cholera.

But seriously, what are the chances it won't just stay in Haiti?

13. So heartbreaking, almost as many cases as deaths from the earthquake
and apparently it was pretty preventable.
