Dilma Rousseff sworn in as Brazil's new president
Dilma Rousseff has been sworn in as Brazil's first woman president, succeeding Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the most popular leader in the country's history.

Ms Rousseff, 63, who has never held elected office, has pledged to follow the path set by President Lula.

He was constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term.

1. Let's give Mr Lula credit for leaving gracefully when his time was up.
With so many clowns in office these days, it's good to see a politician who always conducted himself well.
:applause:

2. Lula leaves the presidency with an 87 percent approval rating
... one would have thought he would declare himself a "dictator." :-)
But he is too classy for that kind of nonsense.

At the reception, Dilma had a chat with Hillary. Dilma spoke in English, Hil does not know Portuguese.

She had a longer chat with Hugo, then with Jose Mujica and his wife Lucia Topolansky (both former Urguayan Tupamaros who like Dilma fought against the military dictatorships, were imprisoned and tortured).

Then Dilma chatted with Lugo, who is recovering from cancer.

No word yet from Itamaraty whether Dilma will meet with Hil on Sunday, when she has one-on-ones with a bunch of world leaders, starting with Hugo.

3. I would be greatly surprised if you could find anybody from
Park Ridge that could speak Portuguese. It might have changed, I haven't been there in 55 years.
