SIDOR not producing enough steel rods for the building industry
Outlining the sector, Roig told Union Radio news agency that there had been an implicit understanding between SIDOR iron & steel company, Sidetur and Sisuca in Zulia in supplying the domestic market.

Since SIDOR was nationalized and Sidetur is in the process, the opposition has launched the accusation of a drop in production.

Roig recalled that the former owners of SIDOR were producing 5 million tonnes of liquid steel whereas this year the level has been 1.2 million. The private sector has been hit hardest by the scarcity of rods.

As things stand, Roig stated, the government will be unable to comply with its ambitious program to build 350,000 in two years since around 450,000 tonnes of rods would be needed.

1. They should import reinforcing bars from Russia or China, or maybe Iran
Evidently the Venezuelan steel industry is in bad shape. They could import steel reinforcing rods to make up the deficit. Or maybe the best solution is to stop using steel rods at all. The best answer maybe to build using plywood and simple 2 X 4 housing with zinc roofs. It won't last as long, but they can paint them with a diverse palette, and it'll be so cute when Sean Penn comes to visit.
