New moves to address housing deficit in Venezuela
Chávez to allocate housing units that have not been built
Although official data show that the government of President Hugo Chávez has only built about 300,000 housing units in 11 years, the Venezuelan president promised that in the next six years his administration will build 2 million dwellings. He also announced that he will grant property deeds to homeless people even though their future houses are not ready.

Chávez announced that by December 31, 2018, millions of Venezuelans will have "their own house". He said that his social project comprises the allocation of houses yet to be build in abandoned lands that "could be expropriated immediately, if necessary."

Venezuelan government built 284,000 housing units in 12 years
President Hugo Chávez Frías relaunched a housing-related project in his weekly radio and TV program on February 14, saying that his government will build two million housing units in seven years. However, under two previous housing-related programs in the last 12 years the Venezuelan authorities managed to build 284,000 dwellings only.

In November 2010, before the emergency created by heavy rains, the Venezuelan Head of State announced that it was time to encourage house building, stressing that the per capita house construction rate showed a negative trend. After heavy rains ravaged hundreds of houses in December 2010, Chávez vowed to speed up the construction of housing units as a personal challenge.
