Chavez stands behind Syrian leader
Syria, facing U.S. sanctions for violent crackdowns on protesters, is "the victim of a fascist onslaught," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday via Twitter.

Chavez, a leftist president who has aligned himself with countries hostile to the United States, said that he spoke on Friday with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, whom he called a "brother."

"God help Syria," Chavez tweeted.

On Friday, anti-government demonstrations broke out in Syria after weekly Muslim prayers, with activists reporting at least 31 deaths amid clashes between security forces and protesters.

3. President Chavez express solidarity to Syrian people facing imperialist attacks
http://www.avn.info.ve/secciones/english/president-chavez-express-solidarity-to-syrian-people-facing-imperialist-attacks

Caracas, 21 May. AVN .- The president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez held a phone conversation with the the president of Syria Bashar Al Assad to personally express his affectionate and hopeful salutations in a moment when the imperialist forces lash the Syrian people violently.

As can be read in the official statement issued by the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Ministry, president Hugo Chavez received from Al Assad a thorough report on the real situation affecting the Arab nation, in which a fascist conspiracy is trying to scatter chaos and disorder so as to subdue Syria to the intentions of western powers.

President Al Assad explained Chavez that said “minoritary violence outbreaks have been rejected by the vast majority of Syrians, and how the situation has been tending to quiet down thanks to the action of the institutions and the government of Syria.”

-----------------------------------

Moreover, the statement reads that “President Hugo Chávez informed his Syrian counterpart about the demonstrations of solidarity made by many Latin American and Caribbean leaders. He also took the opportunity to express President Al Assad his unconditional political and personal support, and his fully conviction that the dignity of the Syrian people and government will achieve peace and that they will prevail over imperialist aggressions.”

7. It is...
...one thing to have diplomatic relations, more or less friendly, with dictators in calmer times. It is a bit worse to act as their principal cheerleader at a time when they send in the troops to bloodily smash protest movements. It really is shockingly poor judgement from Chavez, I mean the economic fuckups could be excused as incompetence but there is hardly any excuses for not uderstanding Gaddafi and Assad turning the troops lose on their own populations in order to cling to power for annother decade.

8. He really should be as quiet as Obama is in his support for Bahrain
and their identical behavior to the Syrian despot. Least said, you know.

10. Identical behavior?
The original post is about Chavez whining about "brother" Assad and Syria being the "victim of a fascist onslaught" - where US and Obama are the fascists for objecting to Assads brute force approach to ending protests. Not exactly the identical behavior towards Syria that you claim.

9. Eleven killed as Syrian funeral becomes protest

AMMAN (Reuters) – Syrian security forces shot dead 11 mourners in the central city of Homs on Saturday at a mass funeral for people killed in the latest crackdown on protests against President Bashar al-Assad, a rights campaigner said.

Human rights lawyer Razan Zaitouna said she had the names of at least 11 people killed when the funeral at Nasr cemetery for 10 pro-democracy demonstrators killed by security forces in Homs on Friday came under fire.

A witness who was at the funeral and spoke to Reuters by telephone said the mourners shouted "overthrow the regime" and that they came under fire as they were leaving the cemetery eight kilometres (five miles) north of the center of Homs.

"The shooting was in cold blood. People were streaming peacefully out of the cemetery," he said.

\

The latest violence came as the Syrian National Organization for Human Rights said security forces had killed at least 44 civilians on Friday in attacks on pro-democracy demonstrations across Syria.
